By request, we have started a team for the upcoming Source-a-Thon that will cover the southern states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.  We call ourselves The Southern Sourcerers!!  Won't you join us?!

If you have your race bib number, answer this post and include your number. If you haven't registered yet, do that first here: http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/298348/

Our team page has been set up and has a list of numerous sources you can use for sourcing profiles.  Note it's only a partial list; there are lots of other sites you can use.

hmmm, Dixie really? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie I'm sure you didn't realize where the name originated but I think it bears consideration before adopting the name. We in the south have a lot to be proud of but "Dixie" isn't one in my opinion.

Jacqueline, Dixie is a geographic location, as stated in the Wikipedia link.  According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the origins of this nickname remain obscure.  USM has a Dixie Darlings team.  Let's not lend connotations that aren't there nor intended.

I know what "Dixie" is. I don't think it's appropriate for WikiTree. Many people would be offended by the name. It's not a team name that is inclusive of all people living in the south or from the south. I find it offensive.
isn't Team Missouri already covering Tennessee??  I joined them already because of that.

Summer, Team Missouri is including Tennessee.  We've agreed to 'share' Tennessee and Arkansas.  The Source-a-Thon is about having fun and getting sources on unsourced profiles.  As I've learned, you can source any profiles that are on the 'unsourced profiles' list during the source-a-thon, not just the ones that are part of whichever team you join.  As an example, I plan to work on some EuroAristo profiles (so not even in the U.S.) during the source-a-thon, since I'm one of the leaders of that project.  What counts is how many profiles you source and remove from the list, not what location the profile relates to.  Thanks for asking!

Jacqueline, I'm quite sorry you find the word 'dixie' offensive.  As I previously stated, no negative connotations or inferences were intended; Dixie refers to a geographical location.  That was the sole intent of the name.  To avoid any conflicts, since this Source-a-thon is about having fun and improving Wikitree, I've changed the name of the team.  We welcome anyone with any interests or roots in any of the southern states to join our team and help improve/source profiles during the Source-a-Thon.
I accept the apology and thank you for changing the name. I did not think you intended anything except a catchy name.
I would like to join the Southern Sourcerers Team.

Thanks, David
I just signed up for October.  Are our #'s different from September?  I was # 10 for September sourcing.  Also, do you want us to add our name on the free space page under "Team"?
Sally, the Source-a-thon is only the 1,2,3 of October. There is no September source-a-thon, though there is always the monthly Sourcerers Challenge, which is related but different. You've already signed up and will be #10 when the event happens next month.

Sally, you need a separate, special # for the Source-a-Thon.  You sign up here:  http://http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/294873/will-you-participate-the-source-thon-current-registrations?show=294873#q294873 by 'answering' the post.  They will then assign you a bib #.  Once you do that, let me know.  Thanks!

Thank you Abby.
I happen to like the name Dixie Darlings, it was catchy and Sourthern.  Wish it would stay.
I agree.
Dear Dixie Darlings,

Please . . . ignore the semantics!  You're all Dixie Darlings, and I love each and every one of you, my sweet honey childs!  We musn't offend people; after all, we're southern belles, which makes us great ladies.  And for the men in our presence, well . . . they're Dixie Darlings as well.

Now get out there and show them just how darlin' my Dixie dames (and gents) are and source those profiles!

Y'all come back now, y'hear?!
When the dust settles ante marathon, let us hold our heads high and with all the Southern sincerity we can muster, say to the other teams, "Bless your heart. You really tried hard."

I'm fixin' to check on the Sat. hours at Huxford. Is anyone else plannin' to be there?
Yeeee Haaaaa
Hi, I would like to join the Southeast Source Group.

YEA!!

Anna, I'm sorry but our team is full.  You can check here and join another team:  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Source-a-Thon_Teams#Team_leadership_during_the_Source-a-Thon

Have a great time and source those profiles!

Howdy, team members!  UPDATED INFORMATION/POST.  The fun begins TONIGHT at 12 midnight Eastern time in the U.S.

I have started a new G2G post, where each of you will need to post an answer and use it to enter/track your sourced profiles: http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/301813. Please go to the new G2G post and 'answer'.  Be sure to include your Race #.  If you don't know it, go to the team page and look it up.  Everyone is listed there alphabetically.

See the answers on this post to see how to answer/list your profiles:  http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/278862/august-2016-sourcerers-challenge

I have updated our team page and given each team member their own 'box' that you can use (if you'd like) to track your profiles.  Note that YOU need to track (& keep a running total, i.e. #) your profiles in order to receive credit.

There will be prizes throughout the event, all based on a random drawing of race #s.  You'll have until the next drawing to claim your prize.  If you don't, you lose it and it goes back into the 'pot' for someone else to win.  Since I can't be online for 72 hours straight, let's all work together to watch the announcements of whose # has been drawn.  If you notice it's for one of our team members, please drop them a private message and post on our G2G thread so that the person has a chance to claim it.  Any questions?

Our team is full.  Here are the team members and their race #s:

  1. Darlene Athey Hill (Bib #355)
  2. Rodney Bowers (Bib #215)
  3. Sandra Davidson (Bib #374)

Just a quick comment:

If you plan to use www.familysearch.org and have not used it before be sure you register an account and sign in so you can see all the records.

Some records such as probate, land, wills, are not available unless you are signed in.

I just mention this because I saw where someone asked where to find sources. So, it was important enough to mention ahead of time.

Good luck everyone! Looking for us to knock this outta the park!

You need to check in on the new post, which is where you will list your sourced profiles.  The race is underway!  Let's get busy!  http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/301813/

Debi, awesome!  I've added your bib # to our team page.  Are you interested in being the group leader for either Saturday or Sunday of the source-a-thon?  Also, can you assist with any sources that team members can use?
I can help with sources. Where do you want them?

I'll give you an answer on leading later today. I'm waiting on some info which will map out my schedule for the next couple of weeks.

KK's bibI'm all in!  Hey are you a Southern Miss fan?  I grew up in the Hub City and went there - marched in the Pride of MS with the Dixie Darlings.... just wondering.

In other news - I just sent you the list I started on resources for each state. I'm not sure - is this ALL southern states?  If so I need to add TN, KY, AR, LA & TX.  I think there is already a team Virginia....

Thanks!

KK

(Karen Kay)

by Karen Kay G2G3 (3.0k points)

Welcome, Karen!  No, not a Southern Miss fan.  The name just 'came' to me.  My dad's maternal lineages cover most of the Dixie states.  We'll be covering all of the states you mentioned; Team Virginia will be separate from us.  States included are:  Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas

Hey Karen Kay. My cousin, Willis Agnes Simmons, was a Dixie Darling back in the '60's. Liked to got us all kicked out of church! What a scandal! (for Pike County- LOL) Maybe they need a category ;-)
Those "DD's" as we band people used to call them, were a hoot!  Fun times!  That's a great memory - they certainly deserve to be remembered!

KK - to answer your comment... Yup, there is a [Team Virginia]!

Cheers, Liz

Oh that's cute Liz!

I would like to join, too!!  I have been holding out for a Southern team to be started.  My number is #51.  All of my father's side of the family is from the South, especially Georgia.

by Kristin Merritt G2G6 Mach 3 (32.7k points)
Kristin, that's great.  I've added you to the Southern Sourcerers team page.  If you've got time in the next week, you might want to start looking over unsourced Georgia profiles and start getting together sources for them.  We have to wait until the start of the source-a-thon on 1 October to actually enter the sources (and be sure to delete the 'unsourced' notation on each profile for which we add a source).

Mary, it's lovely to have you.  I'm also a Texas native, although my family there originally came into SC, then down to GA, then over to AL, then to LA, then to TX.  I look forward to your participation!
Hi Mary,

Should we remove you from Team Missouri then? It looks like you had commented there. Not a big deal; I can just hide your comment there if you would rather join here.

Hi Abby,  sorry to rock the boat.  Shirley asked me the same question.  I will do the Southern Sourcer's team.  Sorry to be a pest...

thanks for asking me though,Shirley and Abby...

AND what is important hopefully we all clear out those unsourced profiles!!

Not a pest! Just making sure we've got our notes straight :-)

Gigi, glad to have you on the team, 'darling'!!  Saw your post re: sources.  Put in a trusted list request on the Southern Sourcerers page; I'll approve it and then you can add other sources yourself (I'll add the ones you listed already).  Thanks much, honey child!

I will try to work with this group I have NO idea what to do to Help one of my lines was from Iredell NC . and moved out to Missouri most of my folks are from PA, OH. CT, KY, RI, ETC ETC....

by Kathleen Townsend G2G6 Mach 1 (13.5k points)

Hi Kathleen, I've added you to the group, but I need your bib #.  Please let me know what it is.  Go to our team page: http://http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Dixie_Darlings  There are links to all of the unsourced profiles for the states that we are including.  You actually can source profiles in ANY state (not just the ones that are within our group); they just have to be on the Unsourced Profiles list:  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:United_States_Unsourced_Profiles

My #is 362
Darlene i have been absent from duty today and I feel bad because this group was closed and some on actually ready to run with this could have done much better than i did today ... If you want to give my # to some one else who is good at this let me know?

Kathleen, teams were finalized yesterday, so there isn't anyone else to take your place.  So you're on the team, and we're hoping you can and will participate.  This post is the wrong post for recording your sourced profiles.  A new one was started yesterday, and that's where we're all recording our sources & where the Wikitree 'higher ups' will look to tally our totals.  So I need you on that G2G post.  I do hope you will be able to do some profiles.  Please let me know what you need from me to get you going...

The post is here:  http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/301813.

Hi, David!  So happy to have you, and thanks for your bib #.  Before the start of the competition, I'll start a new G2G post which will be where everyone 'answers' and lists the profiles they've sourced (i.e. we each have to list what profiles we've completed in order to receive credit).

by Sally Stovall G2G6 Pilot (128k points)
Sally, hold up there, woman!  The contest hasn't started.  This isn't the monthly challenge.  This is a special three day event that starts on October 1st.  So you can get your list of profiles 'ready' with sources to enter if you'd like, but you need to wait and actually 'fix' the profiles beginning Oct. 1.  And I will start a new post that everyone will then, as answers to that, post their lists.  Thanks.
lol  Omg, I thought today was the 1st.  Now that's way to funny.
I love your enthusiasm!  I just don't want you sourcing away and then burn yourself out for next weekend!  Hang tight and work on preparation!  ;)
I've already sourced about 10 Texas profiles.  I will just start fresh next week.  I'm kind of glad cuz I have to bake some no back chocolate oatmeal cookies and Lasagna for tonight, lol  Thank you Darlene.
Actually, Darlene, we're using these same posts for the weekend, so every one needs to post an answer here to join, then they'll comment with their contributions, similar to the monthly Sourcerers challenges.
How do you make no-bake chocolate oatmeal cookies, Sally?
I'll send you the recipe by message.  They are yummy.  I'm about to make Peanut Butter cake with Peanut Butter icing.    yummy.
Okay......I vote we appoint Sally to feed the Souther Sourcers Team while we work. Ha!

I have no idea how to make those chocolate oatmeal cookies but I could sure eat some of them and that peanut butter cake also.

You know how to make Chicken & Dumplings Sally? That and the cake or cookies would be a complete meal!!
Oh my Gosh Gigi, Chichen & Dumplings is my specialty.  That and Chocolate pie.  My family goes nuts when I may my pie.  I have to make a pie per head.  haha.
Maggie, did you make those cookies yet?
not yet, Sally ! I like those kinds of chewy cookies so looking forward to having them. Well, I am spying on your team here. It occurred to me that I have no southern ancestors so have fun, ladies !
Oh yes, It's gonna be tons of fun.

You are allowed to source any profile on the unsourced list, not just ones from the states our team is covering.  I recommend you start looking over the profiles & perhaps planning out your strategy.  Thanks for joining us!

Thanks, Jeri
Hi Jeri!  Looking forward to your participation.  The contest begins this Saturday.  You may want to start looking over some of the unsourced profiles and searching for sources for them.  You can make a list and, once the competition starts, 'have at it' with entering the sources and then removing the "Unsourced" template from the profile.  Each person needs to track their profiles and list them on the G2G post that I will post on Friday.

Jeri, where are you?  The Source-a-Thon started almost 18 hours ago, and you haven't even checked into the 'check-in' page where we all will track our sourced profiles (located here:  http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/301813 )

I do hope you will participate.  Each team was limited to only 20 members, so if some of the members don't help, it brings down the entire team.  Tell me what I can do to help you get started...

Darlene,

I commented to this email before but don't see it. I had company and their 6 year old brought a stomach bug to us all. They left this morning and I've been trying to muddle my way through this very slowly. I have now figured out how to put the sources in a profile but I won't be winning any prizes for you all. I don't feel well but will keep trying. I find the process slow and not user friendly but I'm sure it's just me. I've done 5 so far so not killing it for the team. Now If I could figure how to post the ones I've found I'd be in there.

Kind regards,

Jeri - 397
Jeri, just saw this message.  This is the 'old' post.  The new one is where everyone checked in and started listing their profiles.  I'm sorry you aren't feeling well.  Any profiles you can do will help.  It isn't hard to do.  If you have a text editor on your computer, just open a blank document & keep a running list, then occasionally transfer it to your answer in the G2G post.  That's what I do.  All you need is the profile # (such as Athey-67, census).  Very quick & easy.  Wish I could be there to walk you through it; those of us that have been on Wikitree awhile are able to really tear through them!  Keep trying & you'll get your own rhythm.  I've got faith in you, darlin'!!

Let's have some fun getting ready for the big weekend comin' up!  Since we're all southerners and of course we love the south, but we're mighty competitive too - can you say S.E.C. Y'all?

Holler out which state you think has the best

a. Bar-B-Que

b. Brunswick Stew

c. Red Beans N Rice

d. can't have "c" without what?  and who has the best?

e. pertiest girls (how many Miss Americas or at least top 10's?) you know that's a big thing down here!

f. of course we gotta have somethin' about football:  but to keep us from havina knock down drag out, Let's just say what team we think has the most uh.... crazy fans

g. I'm not gonna say anything about biggest anything cuz no matter what it is everybody knows the answer is always gonna be Texas. So I'll just leave this as an honorary Texas win.

h. who has the most interesting history?   (gotta make you think a little bit!)  please do explain.

i. Who started saying "y'all" first?  Or who invented it. Or whatever. Y'all know what I mean.

k. now everyone who answers, add another question. Let's see how far we can get!  If one state comes up the clear winner, well then.... that's special I guess.

by Karen Kay G2G3 (3.0k points)
Peggy is right! It is caught with your pants down meaning unprepared or by surprise. Not ready for company. Ha!

So, I take it none of you ever put peanuts in your sodas?

I did put peanuts in my COKE! lol

what's this "soda" business?  we say "what kind of coke do you want?"

I have tried peanuts with Barq's but it's better with plain ole coke.

Yes, I've always heard 'caught with your pants down!'

As to most beautiful, well, beauty's in the eye of the beholder.  But when it comes to beauty pageants, Texas is way ahead of everyone (except California) in winners:  https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2014/09/15/americas-most-american-states-as-divined-by-beauty-pageants/

I grew up in Colorado, so we call it 'pop'.  During a brief stint as a cocktail waitress at age 21, someone asked me for a rum and soda.  I had no idea he meant a rum and COKE!  Soda, to me, was club soda...

Never had peanuts with my coke, but my mom and grandmother told me they did.

I love Gigi's commentary about Virginia.  Wonderful history indeed.  I still must say, "Remember the Alamo!"  (What can I tell you?!  Just humor me...)  ;)

Peanuts in an RC Cola!Did I just date myself?
Hey you're right!  It was RC!  I had forgotten all about that!
I don't know about you all, but here in Texas we also eat Corn Bread with our Red Beans..  seasoned with salt pork and bacon grease..  I use a recipe called Perfect Corn Bread
Yeah buddy, Mary!  That's what I'm talkin' bout!

Yum Yum!
Tom's Peanuts in Dr. Pepper :)
Mary, my mom makes super yummy cornbread; she bakes it in an iron skillet.  We didn't eat red beans and rice growing up, but certainly always had to have black eyed peas on New Year's Day for good luck!  Still do!
That's the way I was taught too Darlene! Heat up the skillet with the oil (or Crisco)  in the oven, then pour in the batter. Makes a nice crinkly crust.

Hey Peggy.

I am kinda new too. the way I found the post w/ my bib # was to go to my G2G profile then click on recent activity. It was in my recent posts.  You don't have to put the picture of your bib in here but if you want to you'll see in the tools when you make a comment a little box that looks like a picture of mountains with a sun (or is it a moon?) anyway click on that and copy/ paste the link from your bib pic in there and voila!
You are good now, Peggy. I added you to the team.
Hi Peggy, I edited your comment to add your bib photo.  Glad to have you on the team.  Please visit the team page and look over the information and partial list of potential sites to use to locate good sources.  I'll start a new post on Friday with regard to the contest.  Each person will then want to 'answer' that post & then keep editing their answer to add the list of profiles they've sourced (numbering them so we know the grand total of profiles at the end).  Feel free to post questions on the team page.
thanks Darlene

I haven't been assigned a #, I will add it as quick as I get it.  Is there a list of acceptable sourcing sites and perhaps some examples of how it should be done?  I am very new at this.
by Cyndi Ricks G2G1 (1.4k points)

Hi Cyndi, you can go to our team page and look at the list of a few sites to use to search for sources:  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Dixie_Darlings

Participating means removing profiles from the Unsourced Profiles category.  Even though you're joining the 'Southern Sourcerers' team, you can work on any profile that has an 'Unsourced' template on it.  There are links to all of the ones for the southern states on our team page.

Select an Open (white) profile from anywhere in the category or one of its subcategories and search for sources to back up the facts of the person's life.

Profiles need to come from the Unsourced Profiles categories. They cannot be profiles that you created.

Valid sources include census records, BMD records/index references, military documents, land documents, wills, etc.  A source cannot be another family tree, such as Geni or an Ancestry Member Tree.

If you find a valid source:

  1. Edit the profile to add the source, according to our Sources guide.
  2. Remove the {{Unsourced}} or [[Category:Unsourced Profiles]] categorization or categorizations, and save the profile.
  3. Add the profile's WikiTree ID to the Source-a-Thon G2G tracking message for the Southern Sourcerers team (I'll post a message tomorrow, since I'll be away on Friday).  'Answer' that post, and as you source profiles, click the "edit" link below your answer to add your list of completed profiles.
Cyndi, did you ever sign up and get a race #?  They normally assign them with a couple hours, and it's been a day since your comment.  I only have one space left on our team (there's a limit of 20 people per team)...
Cyndi's #431

Thanks, Abby.

Cyndi, I've added you as the final member of the Southern Sourcerers team.  Welcome!  I'll be posting a new G2G post in awhile which everyone will use to 'answer' and keep track of their sources.  Please review the team page and start preparing (you can start looking at unsourced profiles and look for sources, but you must wait until midnight to start adding sources to profiles):  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Dixie_Darlings

Cyndi, where are you?  The Source-a-Thon started almost 18 hours ago, and you haven't even checked into the 'check-in' page where we all will track our sourced profiles (located here:  http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/301813 )

I do hope you will participate.  Each team was limited to only 20 members, so if some of the members don't help, it brings down the entire team.  Tell me what I can do to help you get started...

Rodney, where are you?  The Source-a-Thon started almost 18 hours ago, and you haven't even checked into the 'check-in' page where we all will track our sourced profiles (located here:  http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/301813 )

I do hope you will participate.  Each team was limited to only 20 members, so if some of the members don't help, it brings down the entire team.  Tell me what I can do to help you get started...

Fellow Wikitree Member Kay Dawson wants to join us. I contacted her last night and asked her to help. She has a lot of sources for Georgia.

She wrote and asked me how to get on our team and I told her and sent her the links to get a bib# and then a link to this so she could get set up.

The link to join and get a bib was full. So, she contacted Abby to get her help.

Can you follow through on her request? She will be a great asset to our team.
