oops... meant to answer
Hi,

So I have just worked out how these challenges work and how to add myself to the challenge of 52 weeks and the rules. However being OCD I can not start a challenge in the middle, so I have gone back to week one and posted weeks 1 through 8., so far.  Whilst I understand that this does not count towards to badges of 13 in 13 etc, it is something I had to do. My question is then where are we this week with the challenge, I thought it was weddings (Week 22) but that I see was sent in May. If you could just give me what the theme is for this week I can start the offical count.

This is a picture of my parents Richard and Ann Rowe at a wedding in the early 60s. I love the way they look so young and happy. Apparently, they'd only recently found out they were expecting me, but it was too early to tell people - which is why my father has the face of someone who is rather delighted but is not going to tell anyone why!

The bottom photo is a 5 Sep 1943 photo of my husband's parents, Lt. LeRoi and Annette Nelson on their wedding day in Brunswick, GA. He left for duty aboard, the USS Evans, a destroyer that saw a great deal of action during WWII until four kamikazes stuck her on 11 May 1945. The crew succeeded in keeping the ship afloat, but 32 were killed and 27 wounded, and the ship was towed and scraped. She had his baby, my husband, during this time of not seeing him for 18 months.  This top photo was taken 25 years later on the same steps, and their three children are peeking from behind the pillars.

by Alexis Nelson G2G6 Pilot (862k points)
Great photos!! Great story. I especially enjoyed the three children peeking from behind the pillars. Thank you for sharing all of this.
Thank you  Robin, I was the one taking the photo, and my husband is on the left.

Thank you Susan, my father-in-law was very interested in genealogy.  I wish he was still here; we would have so much fun together going through records and photos.
Great photos, Alexis. I feel the same way about my Dad. He would have loved WikiTree.
Thank you Laurie, I often think if he was with me I would only have to do half as much.
Wow, that's getting by on your luck!  Great to hear he made it, beautiful photos.
Thank you SJ, he was a wonderful man, and we were lucky to have him in our lives.
Either your mom was very short, or your dad was very tall. Either way, it is wonderful to see them celebrate their 25th with their kids, and still having a great time together!
I love the 2 photos, years apart, with all their kids. You did a good job choosing those!!
She was 5’2” and he was 6’2”. Thank you Cheryl. It was a fun time in Georgia.
Thank you Lynn, since I used the good wedding photo on Sweethearts.

Well, it's always good to be "Sweethearts" before the wedding.  cheeky

These are my parents. They got married in 1968.

My father's mother died when he was just a boy and his father got married again one year later. His second wife had a niece who spent the summers with her. This little girl, with just eight years, felt in love with her so called stepcousin, but he was a teenager with no time for children.

Ten years later, she got what she wanted: they got married. That way, my mother's parents-in-law was her aunt and uncle and her sisters-in-law were her cousins.

My parents where happy together until he died, three years ago.

What a wonderful story! Thank you for sharing this photo. Also, I'm sorry for your loss -- it's hard when you lose a parent.
gorgeous photo of your parents they really are gorgeous
Such a heartwarming story and photo, Margarita.
Ha - he had no time for children, but he ended up as her groom.

They look like a very happy bride and groom and made for each other.

So sorry for your loss!
What a cool story!!  And your dad looks like the news guy, Bill Hemmer.
Thanks for all your messages.

Yes, I have always thought that my parents' story is very beautiful.

And yes, it has been hard to lose my father, especially for my mother. But luckily we have many good memories that make us smile thinking about him.

Thank you, Susan, for sharing this lovely photo. I really like Hilda's veil. It is too bad she died so soon.
Thank You Robin how sweet of you
You have such unique photos, Susan. The contrast of the dress and the white veil is striking. What do you suppose she wore in her hair?

These are my paternal grandparents, Harry Augustus Thorniley and Ethel (pronounced eeeeee-thul) Irwin.  They married in 1907 and this was during their wedding trip to DC.  Harry had been married before, to Bonnie Green, and they had a child, Frances. Bonnie died when Frances was only 3 and Harry enlisted the help of his older sister to raise Frances.  He moved them to California (not sure why) and his sister, Annie, remained there.... that's where Frances grew up.  Harry went back to Ohio, and 7 years later, he married my grandmother, who was 20 years younger.  Together, they had 4 children.  Frances had a good relationship with Ethel and the 4 children, and came back every year to visit.  I remember her well.  She and her husband were amateur "rock hunters", and she knew I loved that kind of thing, so every year, she would send me some rocks and geodes from California.

Wonderful photo of your grandparents. He does not look older than she does; they are a very attractive couple.
Yes, that struck me, too. Ethel sounds like a wonderful person.
What an amazing picture. Thank you for sharing. Your grandfather looks very young. I hope those genes were passed down through the generations!
Thank you, Susan and Alexis.  Laurie,  she was a great person.  She accepted Frances as her own and they grew to be friends.  Cheryl, I got lucky!  I think they did pass those genes down to me!

My mom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Barr, on their wedding day.  They went on to have three children and five grandchildren and were happily married for nearly 54 years.

by K. Anonymous G2G6 Pilot (148k points)
Usually one comments on the bride (very lovely, BTW), but Mr. Barr looks particularly natty.
This has always been one of my favorite pictures of them.
Beautiful couple, and obviously very much in love if they celebrated 54 years of marriage together.

Your grandfather looks like he protected your grandmother. Look at the way he holds her hand.  How sweet.
Look at the groom's shoes.  He DOES look quite "natty".

This photo is of my paternal grandparents on their "Wedding Trip" in November 1912. They are standing in front of a cliff on the beach in Santa Cruz, California.

There was a story that said that my grandfather had to walk through fields to get to the minister's home for the wedding. Since he didn't want to get his dress pants dirty, he rolled the cuffs up. But then he forgot to roll them back down again. It must have made an impression on everyone since the story has been passed down.

Gorgeous photo Robin of your paternal grandparents

They both look adorable

What a gorgeous hat she is wearing

Thank you, Susan. You are always so kind!
Wonderful photo and story, Robin. I love the hat, too, but it's the huge buttons on her coat that caught my eye. Very stylish couple, cuffs rolled up or not!
Robin, your grandmother is a beautiful lady. Thanks for sharing their story.
I agree, Laurie. I think they look very nice. They were married for almost 57 years, until my grandfather died in 1969.
Thank you, Alexis. My grandmother was a tiny woman. I don't think she ever weighed over 100 lbs. But she had a will of iron.
What a cute couple. Did it become a habit for your grandfather to roll his cuffs up all of the time? I love your grandmother's coat. It is very stylish, and she looks so petite

Very beautiful couple, and she has good taste in hats too.
I was wondering the same thing as they are rolled in the photo. Perhaps that was the style?? Anyway, I don't remember him wearing his pants like that later on.

Thanks, Alexis. Very Edwardian, isn't it? I can't imagine wearing one of those hats, but then I guess that's what hat pins were for!
What a fantastic wedding photo Laurie, the couple look amazing really beautiful and all the guest are really amazing dress.

Fantastic photo.  It is just beautiful.  Thanks for sharing it.
What a fabulous photo! I love everything about it. The dresses, the flowers, and especially the hats really stand out. Thanks for sharing it.
Thanks everyone. It's one of my favourites.
I would have to rate this my favorite picture so far. Sorry everyone. The baskets of flowers, the bouquets, the fabulous hats, and the picture is full of beautiful people.

Below is my maternal grandmothers wedding in 1946 - Jean Stephens and George Mathias.

George is my step grandfather, not my biological maternal grandfather.

500px-Mathias-414-1.jpg

Jean had an illegitimate child (my mother) born in 1937, and as far as I know she never told anyone at all. It was such a shameful thing to admit to, back in the 1930s and 1940s. She had 4 children with George and again, as far as we can tell, none of them are aware of their older half sister. We have another cousin from Jeans family making plans to tell the family some time soon.

The only reason we know who my maternal grandfather is, is of course through DNA.

by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
It's wonderful to know the story behind the photo even if it's a sad one. I can't imagine what it must have been like for  women like your grandmother. It makes one realize how lucky we are to live in more enlightened times.
You have my prayers that the family will be accepting to the news regarding your mother.. How terrible for your mom to have a complete family that didn't know that she was alive.

Is your mom alive today? I hope so - and I hope that she has the chance to connect with her family.

Bless you.
My mom is still living. She has connected to some cousins in her biological fathers side, found through DNA. She has also connected with one cousin on her mothers side. That is the cousin who is planning to break the news.

We can only hope that things go well.

One's of Jeans daughters has already passed away.
Thank You Robynne for sharing this wonderful photo, I love how everyone looks so elegant in there outfit

My great grandparents, Will and Grace, on their wedding day.

by Alex Stronach G2G6 Pilot (372k points)
This is an unusual photo for its time because the man is sitting and the woman is standing. I suspect the photographer knew that Will's dark suit would fade into the background but that Grace's dress would pop out. Wonderful photo.
If I told you that their names would make a good TV show, would you laugh?

Anyway, very handsome couple. and I love Grace's dress.
You’re right, it is unusual the way they are positioned in the photo. This photo is one of several in a collection from that day, so there probably was a main photo with the bride and groom standing next to each other. Who knows.

Yes Cheryl, I did notice the TV reference as well! Lol

I love the title of that show, and I was in university studying philosophy when the show premiered, so I recognized right away where the name comes from. The producers chose the name Will and Grace for a reason, from the old philosophical argument: Do we, as people, act out free “Will” or are our destinies predetermined by the “Grace” of god? Perfect title for a sitcom.

Not so sure if my great grandparents would have understood the reference though... wink

I loved the show. Lots of laughs - Their personalities fit perfectly together.
gorgeous photo Alex of your great grandparents

Great-grandparents Frank Edward Herling and his bride Ingrid "Inez" Amanda Helgren.  They migrated from Sweden to Minnesota, and then during the depression moved to California to care for their son who became ill while in the US Navy.

by SJ Baty G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
This is a slightly different wedding picture than I am used to seeing.

I am sorry that their son became sick during the war. Moving from Minnesota to California to care for him is exactly what loving parents do.

Thank you for sharing this picture and their story.
What a fabulous photo! I love the way your great grandmother is dressed, and she is very beautiful.
what a fantastic photo SJ wow so wonderful
Traditional Swedish wedding costumes from the late 19th century.  They were a close-knit community.  My Grandmother was born in 1919, about 35 years after the family migrated from Sweden and her home language was Swedish and she still spoke it until her death in 2007.  It is too bad she didn't teach my mother and my siblings and I.
A lovely old photo SJ. I always wished that cameras were invented much earlier than they were.
Great photo.  I love their outfits!  Thanks for sharing.

David,

I love this picture. Her dress has a very modest flapper style to it, along with the piece in her hair. James is dressed very conservatively.

I am not sure what they wear in Australia for weddings, but James and Vera are dressed up very nicely.

Thank you for sharing this picture.

Hi Cheryl,

Thanks.

I'm not sure you are seeing the whole photo, because I can't myself. I had trouble while doing it and wasn't even sure it uploaded. It is also on this profile of James Johnston.

David.

You are right, David. I wasn't seeing the whole picture. Did you click on the picture to copy it, and then click control and v to show it on this page?
No Cheryl, I right clicked the photo, copy link address, like I did with all the other 20 odd photos I've put on here and this is only the second time this has happened. I guess I stuffed up again.

David,

Well, I am sorry it didn't show all of the picture, David, because the whole picture does look a lot different.

But whatever happened, I do want to thank you for sharing the picture. And I goofed up by misnaming all the parties involved. Sorry for that.

It is a great picture.

Have a blessed night. smiley

Ha Ha. Thanks Cheryl,  it is I who stuffed up royally.
what a fantastic old photo wedding photo, what a treasure to have

Thank You David for sharing
I advise everyone to click on the link to James Johnston provided in an above comment to see the original photo. The two shown here are not the bride and groom, and are only the edge of the wedding party. It is indeed a great photo, with the bride holding a bouquet of white lilies.
Thanks Susan and Alison.
You can edit the post, then right-click on the image to change the image properties.  For width put in something like 650, then we'll be able to see the whole thing.
Thanks for your help Rob. That fixed it.

52 Photos Week 22 - Wedding

500px-Smith-159365-5.jpg

On January 7, 1956 my mom and dad (Couple on the right) stood up for their best friends, Gene & Della (Tiny) Clark, at their wedding in Chicago, Illinois.

As you can tell from the picture, these two couples always had a lot of fun together. My dad and Gene were in a country band together. Gene played the lead guitar and my dad played the steel guitar.

To me, they were my Uncle Gene and Aunt Tiny, and they were best friends until they died. My mom is the only one still alive.

Thank You Cheryl for sharing the photo with those two wonderful couples

Your parents look wonderful

This is a wedding photo that, if I remember correctly, got me started on Wikitree! It has my second great-grandfather, William Nelson Jones (1847-1916). He is the brother of the bride, Annette Jones.

This is a very nice wedding picture. I love her dress, and the men are dressed very nice also. I guess the groom is the one with the tie?

Thank you for sharing this picture with us.
The groom would be the one labelled Amos Baron, with the check mark over his head.

There are numerous family wedding photos among the family history photo gallery.

However, my wife, Marguerite Marie Kulhavy-Sims (1941-....), looks at what I write on WikiTree.  So thought I would take the route of least resistance and show a photo taken at our wedding.

The wedding took place on 17 AUG 1963.

What a beautiful wedding picture, and your bride is lovely. Her wedding dress is gorgeous, and the guy standing next to her isn't too bad either.

Thank you for sharing your wedding picture with us.

May you be blessed with many more years of being happily married.
Well Bill it seems that your wife married a very smart man. I agree. The bride and the dress are beautiful indeed. Oh, and I did I mention he's not bad either, lol.

My grandparents, Ben and Betty Mounts, on their wedding day in 1950.

They met at a summer church camp in Arkansas where they both volunteered, and they were married the next summer there at the camp. Neither of them was from that place - he was central Missouri and she was from Iowa - but they wanted to be married at the place where they met.

I remember my grandma telling me that her friends at camp gathered wildflowers to decorate for the wedding. The newspaper clipping says that she carried a white Bible and with white flowers and white satin streamers.

And I'm fairly sure this photo was taken on their 40th anniversary.

I was six years old, and I was there at the celebration. But I mostly just remember somebody made cheese balls an an hors d'oeuvre, and I was so impressed, because I had never heard of such a thing.

by Jessica Hammond G2G6 Mach 3 (34.7k points)
Both photos are amazing I enjoy looking at them both
What great pictures you shared with us. I would say that your grandparents were definitely meant to be. Meeting at a church camp and falling in love. I like that they married at the same place that they met.

Thank you for sharing their pictures.
