Biography

The dates for Pole are based on dates for his grandson, Sir John Michell reported in the Parliamentary Record. Essentially, the math works like this (number of steps refers to source number):

  • 1. Sir John Michell (d.c. 1588), "The first known reference found about him is as captain of the Maudlyn of Truro in May 1537. The deputy searcher of the port reported to the Council that he had boarded the ship, which was bound for Lantregar in Brittany with ‘a company of riotous persons feigning a pope holy pilgrimage’." WikiTree ID Michell-336 This same source indicated he likely died before 21 June 1588.
  • 2. & 3. Research on ages of ship officers shows most officers were in their 30s and that early 30s was still considered to be "young" 1537-30 =1507 probably latest he was born. Sir Francis Drake was 33 when he was a Captain so using him as a guide, we will set Sir John's birth date as 1490s to 1507. (Currently his profile is project protected by Euristo Project and probably needs to be changed from the before 1520 that is showing). This would mean he lived into his 70s, 80s, or possibly 90s all of which are plausible.

4a. John, WikiTree ID Michell-2, father of Sir John Michell (d.c. 1588) would be at least 20 at time of John's Birth. So this would make his birth date 1470s to 1487. (Currently his profile is project protected by Euristo Project and probably needs to be changed from the "before 1497" that is showing).

4b. John, WikiTree ID Michell-2, is shown as husband of Alice Beauchamp and she is shown as the mother of Sir John. We believe her birth date will likely be similar to that of her husband from 1470s to 1487.

Conclusion: Pole is likely born 1450s or 1460s. 1470 at latest. We merged ther 2 Pole Beauchamp profiles that were showing in WikiTree. This one and Beauchamp-100. We believe the idea that there was a junior and a senior came from the Cornwall Visitations book showing a number 2 after his name. However, if you look at the book as a whole you will see the males of the families are each numbered by birth order among the males. Therefore, we believe this indicates he is a younger brother of Beauchamp of Sommersetshire.

5. No source has been found that supports this assertion "The lineage becomes non-patrilineal through Margaret, daughter of Edmund de Ferrers, wife of John Beauchamp, 1st Baron Beauchamp and technically unlawful through their grandson Pole Beauchamp (1470–1538), the illegitimate son of Richard Beauchamp, 2nd Baron Beauchamp. Pole Beauchamp (known on occasion as Pole Fitzbeauchamp) was a near kinsman of the legitimate Lygon line"

  • one of the Pole profiles was created on 19 October 2010 through the import of Ancestors of Lois Greene.ged. This version had the following information which we determined to be in error:

Pole II was born in 1492. He passed away about 1560. He was the son of Sir Pole I Beauchamp, and the grandson of Sir Richard, 2nd Baron of Powyck and Hatch. Pole II's mother is unknown, but there is no doubt that his daughter was Alice (Bauchamp) Michell who married Sir John III Michell, MP, and Mayor of Truro, Cornwall County (See the reference below which exists in the files of the English college of arms, the last word in English genealogy). Baron Richard betrayed his father's Lancastrian orientation during the wars of the roses, and it could be that little is known about either of the two Pole Beauchamps, because they were both well-placed to claim the throne of England, because the mother of Pole I Beauchamp was Baroness Elizabeth de Stafford (1446-Jan 1476), The daughter of the Duke of Buckingham. Elizabeth's mother, Duchess Elizabeth, was the granddaughter of Prince John of Gaunt, son of King Edward III. Both King Henry VII and Tudor spent decades slaughtering He passed away about 1560.

Please review new write up with new sources and calculations on Pole Beauchamp-99. This profile should now be merged into that profile.

Suggested merge. There is no evidence there were 2 Pole Beauchamps. The entry in the Cornwall Visitations with the 2 behind his name indicated placement in a family structure. He is listed as a brother and a 2 means he is the 2nd male. I have done a lot of research on this man and would like to add sources and correct dating.

Beauchamp-100 and Beauchamp-99 appear to represent the same person because: Merge 100 into 99 keeping the 1470 date for birth

I am not on trusted list for them so can't do the merge.

This profile needs deleting as I don't think he existed.

No source material that he had a son Pole Beauchamp, probably a good idea to detach from Pole the younger as it is misleading.

Beauchamp-1501 and Beauchamp-100 appear to represent the same person because: duplicate of Beauchamp-1503 - same typo in birth year
Beauchamp-1503 and Beauchamp-100 appear to represent the same person because: both father of Alice, married to John MIchell. Beauchamp-1503 has a typo in the year of birth
Beauchamp-1503 and Beauchamp-1501 do not represent the same person because: there is a profile with a lower id
