Biography

Lott Conant, son of Roger and Sarah (Horton) Conant was born about 1624 at Nantasket, now Hull, Plymouth Colony. [1][2][3][4]
He married Elizabeth Walton of Marblehead about 1649. Elizabeth was the daughter of Rev. William Walton from the parish Seaton Devonshire, where she was baptized on October 27, 1629.[2][3][4] Her brother Josiah named her as Elizabeth Conant in his will.[5] Though he lived in Marblehead (certainly by 1657), his children are all recorded as being born at Beverly, and were baptized at the First Church of Salem.

  • 1662: Selectman in Marblehead.[2]
  • 1666: November 20: Given the homestead at Beverly with 32 acres adjoining and 72 acres in other parts of the town by his father [Essex Deeds Vol. 3 p. 28][6], which he then leased to his father and mother for an annual rent of "one Indian corn."[7] About this time he probably moved to Beverly and built a house near his father's for a dwelling house and orchard containing about 4 acres with an old house of his father is mentioned in the inventory of his estate. [2]
  • 1667: Had one cow's commonage.[2]
  • 1667: July 4: He was one of those dismissed from the First Church of Salem to form a church at Bass River or Beverly. [2]
  • 1669/70: March 10: He sold to Vinson Stilson of Marblehead, all that his messuage tenement, or dwelling house, with the land on which it stands and land belonging being 4 acre in Marblehead. [see Essex Deeds, Vol. 1; p. 181].[2]
  • 1671: March 20: Sold additional land in Marblehead to John Treby. [see Essex Deeds, Vol. 3; p. 140].[2]
  • 1674: May 25: Lot Conant recorded as one of the 114 householders in Marblehead.[8]
  • 1674: September 24. Lot Conant made his will which was proved just 5 days later.
Lot Conant made his will on 24 September 1674 and it was proved just 5 days later on 29 September 1674. In it, he states only his son Nathaniel by name, but also left bequests to "my wife", "my five sons" and "my five daughters." His estate inventory was valued at £782.16.0, and consisted of numerous livestock and tools of animal husbandry, 8 or 9 pieces of land including his dwelling house and orchard, and a dwelling house in Marblehead, his shop, household goods and provisions, 2 muskets and three swords.

Born: About 1624.
In his will dated 24 September 1674, he stated himself as being about fifty years of age.[9]

Marriage and Children

Married: Elizabeth Walton about 1649 as their first child was born in July 1650. She was the daughter of William Walton and his wife Elizabeth Cooke, baptized on 27 Oct 1629 at Seaton, Devonshire, England. They had ten children. Following the death of Lot, she remarried to Andrew Mansfield in 1681. Elizabeth died after 1683.[2][3][4]

  1. Nathaniel Conant. Born on July 28, 1650; baptized at the First Church of Salem on May 26, 1662; married Hannah Mansfield ; died 1732.
  2. John Conant. Born on December 15, 1652; baptized at the First Church of Salem on May 26, 1662 ; died September 30, 1724; married Bethiah Mansfield of Lynn, at Beverly on May 7, 1678 .
  3. Lot Conant. Born on February 16, 1657; baptized at the First Church of Salem on May 26, 1662 ; died about 1744; married first Abigail ---; married second, Elizabeth Pride.
  4. Elizabeth Conant. Born on May 13, 1660; baptized at the First Church of Salem on May 26, 1662.
  5. Mary Conant. Born on July 14, 1662; died Nov. 23, 1743; married first, Andrew Burley; married second, Sergeant Caleb Kimball.
  6. Martha Conant. Born on August 15,1664; baptized 12: 8: 1664 [October 12, 1664]; died January 2, 1754; married Luke Perkins on May 31, 1688. [11]
  7. Sarah Conant (twin). Born on February 19, 1666; baptized 3: 5: 1667 [July 3, 1667] at the First Church Salem; died on November 1, 1750; married George Trow.
  8. William Conant (twin). Born on February 19, 1666; baptized 3: 5: 1667 [July 3, 1667] at the First Church Salem; married Mary Woodbury.
  9. Roger Conant. Born on March 10, 1669; baptized 23: 3: 1669 [May 23, 1669]; died in 1745; married Mary Raymond.
  10. Rebecca Conant. Born on January 31, 1670; baptized 28: 9: 1671 [November 28, 1671]; married Nathaniel Raymond.

Death

Died: Between 24 September 1674 and 29 September 1674.
Dates his will was made and proved.
Will: In his will, prepared: 24 of the 7 month 1674 [September 24, 1674], and proved on September 29 in the Salem Court, he states as being about fifty years of age. [2][9][12]
In it he left bequests to:
  • his wife, as executrix, should have the dwelling house and orchard for her lifetime
  • £50 to each of my five sons
  • son Nathaniel to have the shop and tools over the rest
  • £20 to each of my five daughters
  • my kinswoman Leech to have a cow or heifer at her marriage or her going from my wife
Will of Lott Conant:
I Lot Conant aged about fiftie yeers being sicke and weak, yet of p'fit understanding doe hereby declare my last will and testament wherein in the first place I doe bequeth my soule unto god that gave it, and my body to the grave in hope of a blessed resurrection: and for my outward estate ,and goods I doe bequeath and give unto my five sonns to each of them fiftie pounds and unto my sonn nathaniel the shop and tools over & above the rest, and unto my five daughters twenty pounds to each of them and this estate I leave to be whole and unbroken till they come to full age or to marriage estate and in the meane time the whole to rest in the hands of my wife, and for the bringing up of the children and further more my will is that my wife be executrix and that the Iand be not at all disposed off from the children and that my wife have the dwelling house and orchard for her life time. and also that my kinwoman mari Leach have a cow or heifer at her being married or going from my wife. And for help unto my wife in this matter I doe instruct and designe mr. John Hale, Captaine Lathrop and my brother Exercise Conant to be assisting. hereunto I have subscribed my hand this 24 of the 7 month 1674.

Common Errors to Avoid
  • Name of first son: The original record for Nathaniel is damaged and the record is read as "___iell." The town clerk of Beverly when recopying the records thought the name was Samuel. However, in all subsequent records he is called Nathaniel, and there is no other reason to think he was born Samuel and then baptized as Nathaniel.
