Biography

European Aristocracy
Peter Ros was a member of the aristocracy in England.

According to Keats-Rohan, his parentage is unknown, but he probably derived his surname from Ros in Holderness, Yorkshire. He was steward (dapifer) of the Count of Aumale, lord of Holderness. Piers gave land in Gilling near Helmsley, and the church, to St. Mary's Abbey in Yorkshire.[1] He has been detached from Malcolm Ros as a father due to lack of proof.

Through his wife Adeline Espec, youngest sister and coheir of Walter Espec, his family became lords of the feudal barony of Helmsley, in Holderness.[2] His known children:

  • Everard de Ros. Succeeded his father by 1129/30 when he appears in the Pipe Roll. Married Eustachia. Died about 1158.
  • Robert de Ros. Constable to the count of Aumale. Married Sibil de Valognes. Took over from his brother. Died about 1162-3 leaving a minor son Everard.

Helmsley is in Ryedale, not Holderness, though some detached estates of the Barony could have been there.

I've detached Malcolm as his father and Gilbert as his son.
We should disconnect the father and the son Gilbert unless we can get real evidence. Even a serious hypothesis might be good enough, but then one based on primary records etc.

Maybe the Father could be correct for Piers but not the Mother. More research for parents
