Biography

This profile represents Arkil Morel, found in early literature as the person that killed and seen as the nephew of Robert de Mowbray. He is said to have been present, or possibly the instigator of the ambush that led to the death of Malcolm III at what became known as the Battle of Alnwick.[1]

Birth: 1010-1080 Dunbar, East Lothianshire or 1050 Bearley, Dunbar, Burgh, Scotland

Death: Fife, Scotland

Name

Arkil Morel (d.1095)[2]

Jackson stated that Arkil Morel's name is recorded as Arkil three times; Archill three times; Archil thirteen times; Arcill once (in the Book of Deer); and Arch- once.[3]

Marriage

He married an Heiress of Dunbar.

Research Notes

It is possible that he was a fictional character but he appears in a number of early sources and is suspected of being real.. There was an Arkil Morel appearing as Sheriff of Northumbria and he is likely the same person.

Under Biography the text reads " found in early literature as the person that killed and seen as the nephew of Robert de Mowbray".

That reads as though Morel killed Robert de Mowbray which wouldn't be too likely as Arkil died at least 30 years prior to Robert who spent his remaining years in one prison or another.
