Sual /Sewall Abbot resident in German Flatts, Herkimer, New York 1799, 1800, 1801, 1802, and 1804. He sometimes appears on the tax list next to Aaron Abbot[8]
Sewel and Dorothea Abbott listed as parents for birth of son, Calvin Abbott, on 30 June 1805 at Lutheran Saint Pauls Church, Minden Township, Montgomery, New York. Assume this is the same Sewell and Dorothy.[9]

Shays Rebellion

A Sewall Abbott is listed among the Shays Rebellion participants in the town of Belchertown, Massachusetts:

“The town records contain the following names of those who participated in the Shays rebellion: ‘A list of the names of several persons that were concerned in the late rebellion, who lived in Belchertown, and took and subscribed the oath of allegiance before Caleb Clark, Esq.: … Sewall Abbott…” ‘Attest: E. Dwight, Town Clerk’ " [10]

Note that Belchertown and Greenwich, Massachusetts (the Abbott farmstead) were adjacent. The towns were partially merged to form Enfield, Mass., and those locations later became part of Quabbin resevoir. From the Wikipedia article: "In 1816, part of Belchertown was combined with part of the town of Greenwich, Massachusetts, to form Enfield, Massachusetts. In 1938, Enfield and Greenwich were two of the four towns that were disincorporated to make way for the Quabbin Reservoir, and the northwest part of Enfield was merged back into Belchertown. [11]

Sewell would have been 18-19 during the events of Shays Rebellion (1786-87). His father, Aaron Abbott had sold property in North Greenwich, Massachusetts in 1785 [12] -- possibly to cover the debts and increased taxes that were a grievance for the rebels. The family moved to New York a few years after the Rebellion.

It seems likely -- based on the name and location of the Shays Rebellion participant, the family's move out of the state shortly after the Rebellion, and Sewell's own age and relationship to a Revolutionary Veteran -- that this is the same person. ( A. Hayes )
