In 1712 word hy gelys as geweldiger (persoon wat wet onderhou in garnisoen). In 1715 word hy onder burgers gelys. Die gegewens van sy eerste aankoms maak melding van ‘n Maandbrief met die name van twee kinders, nl. Willemintie en Matens. Dit is dus moontlik dat hy voorheen getroud was en dat die kinders in Europa gebly het.[6]
