LATE MR. THOMAS ADAMS. The Lower Hunter lost one of its oldest and best known and esteemed residents, on Sunday, when the late Mr. Thomas Adams died at his son-in-law's residence, Tarro, at the age of 82. The deceased had been ill only a few weeks, bronchitis and old age being the cause of his passing. Prior to that he had enjoyed good health, and was able to take a keen and intelligent interest in all that happened around him. He was born at Motto Farm, and remained in the district the whole of his life, he was married at St. John's, Raymond Terrace, by the late Rev. Samuel Simms. His wife pre-deceased him on September 25, 1918. The late Mr. Adams experienced many vicissitudes during his early life, and when he started out in search of his daily bread the winning of it was hard and precarious compared to the later period of his life. He, along with the late Mr. Andrew McDonald as companion, frequently rowed their boat from Tomago to Newcastle, with vegetables and sold them on the wharves, which were designated 'The Market,' by the early pioneers. Always an industrious man, he actively followed farming pursuits. His first efforts were at Motto Farm with his father; later he was at Williamtown; afterwards on Miller's Forest; then to Tomago, and from there to Sinclair's Point, Seaham. From the latter place he retired 10 or 12 years ago, and resided in Raymond Terrace for a few years; Later he took up his residence with his daughter, Mrs. West, at Tarro. His family is a large one and are among the best known and respected people of the Lower Hunter. His sons are: Messrs. Roberts, Seaham: Oliver, Hinton; John, Maitland; R. S. (Seaham) ; W. J. Gloucester; Bert, Brookfield; and William, Waratah. His daughters are: Mrs. L. R. Sparke, Seaham ; Mrs. A. Maher, Cooran, Queensland; Mrs. E. G. Boyce, Nelson's Plains ; Mrs. A. G. Fraser, Stratford, and Mrs. T. H. West, Tarro. There are 80 grandchildren and 52 great-grand-children. He was held in the highest esteem amongst a large circle of friends, and his services were at the ready command of everyone. Where he could be useful that was where he tried to be, and where advice was required it was often solicited from him and freely given. He had a wide experience of the varying conditions of the Lower Hunter, and that experience was invaluable at times. As a judge of stock there were few better, and in all stock ailments he was a self taught veterinary and applied his knowledge with good results. Those who had the good fortune to reside alongside of him as a neighbour speak in the most eulogistic manner of his many good deeds, and the time he would freely sacrifice to do a good turn. The funeral was one of the largest that has passed through Raymond Terrace. Rev. Canon Kitley at the service in church, referred in definite terms of the value during his life that the deceased had been. The remains were laid in the- old portion of the C. of E. cemetery at Raymond Terrace.
