Biography

Thomas Charles Alley was born at least by 1770 in Dublin Ireland. Died in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

He married Catherine Douglas in 1793. [1]

They had a daughter Amelia in 1800. [2]

"The paternal great-grandfather, Thomas Charles Alley, was a native of Dublin, Ireland, and came to Prince Edward Island in the year of 1818, the early days of its settlement." [3]

In 1818, Thomas petitioned for three water lots for himself and his two sons, William and Charles in Georgetown. The lots for his sons were reserved until the sons reached age 21. In the petition, he referred to himself as one of Georgetown's first settlers.

He was involved in civic life, being the representative for Georgetown in the Lower House of Assembly in 1818-1819. [4]

He married Elizabeth Dawson Wood, a widow, after the death of her husband in 1818.

In 1841, Mrs Elizabeth Wood, widow, signed a land conveyance with Thomas Alley. No mention is made of a relationship. [5]

Elizabeth said she was a widow in 1858 when she sold property to her son Thomas Charles Alley. [6]

His son William Alley married Margaret Aitken 19 September 1828.

Research Notes

Charles Douglas Alley, born 1800 in Ireland, married Elizabeth's daughter in New Brunswick - he was likely the son Charles for whom Thomas tried to buy a water lot, since his son Thomas Charles Alley wasn't born yet.

In the 1861 Census, there was only one Thomas Alley, a man between 21-45, who had only one person in his household over 60 - a woman and only one person born in Ireland.

Thomas didn't leave a will.

Elizabeth's gravestone didn't have either of her husbands.

However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

Alley-2436 and Alley-834 appear to represent the same person because: Same place of birth and death, same name. Date of birth probably the earlier date.
