Biography

Bartholomew Applegate was born about 1625 (estimate based on marriage) the son of Thomas Applegate and his wife Elizabeth (surname unknown).[1]

He married in October 1650 to Hannah/Anneken Patrick, daughter of Daniel Patrick.[1]

Name

Bartholomew Wall Applegate [2]

Birth

1620

1635, Weymouth, Massachusetts. [2]

Migration to New Jersey

"Bartholomew Applegate, son of Thomas, married 1650 Hannah Patrick. He is believed to have left Long Island about 1674, settlings near Cranbury, in which vicinity his descendants are numerous. Many of this branch of the family spell the name, Appleget. His children were John, Daniel, Hannah, Mary, and it is supposed Thomas, Benjamin, Jacob and probably others."[3]

Court Records

"Thomas & Bartholamew Appllgate" were plaintiffs in a case to sue Shrewsbury residents for "Non performance of a written agreement made by the Towne Clarke on the behalf of aforesaid Plaintiffs craves the Judgment of this Corte" which was scheduled for 2 Sep 1679. They dropped their case however. [4] No additional details were recorded by the Court.

Death

1690 [5]

Research Notes

What evidence is there for a middle name Wall? I know it's his mother's LNAB, but it was unusual for a non-aristocrat to have a middle name in the 1620s.

No land records under his name or variations. https://wwwnet-dos.state.nj.us/DOS_ArchivesDBPortal/EarlyLandRecords.aspx

No will abstract in the NJ Calendar of Wills.

There is an article written by a NJ Founders group which lists Bartholomew as a founding ancestor. The story of Bartholomew uses these sources:

The Great Migration Begins by Robert Charles Anderson, Boston 1995 - already used here.

Historical and Genealogical Miscellany: Early Settlers of New Jersey and Their Descendants, Vol. III , by John E. Stillwell, New York 1914

This Old Monmouth of Ours by William S. Honor, Moreau Bros. Freehold, NJ 1932

I don't know where to locate the last one, but it may be worth a look.

Can it be possible that he was born in 1625 in Livingston, New York? Was New York even established at that time, it was New Amsterdam until 1640.
