Richard Argall was born about 1536 in London, England to parents Thomas Argall and Margaret Tallakarne. He became the 2nd Lord East Sutton in 1575. The ancient seat of the family was Herst Manor, Otterden Parish, Kent, in Ed II until Queen Elizabeth I when Robert Filmer moved to Little Charleton, East Sutton.[1][2]

Richard supposedly purchased East Sutton Park, near Maidstone in Kent, from John Tufton of Hothfield, but more likely inherited the estate from his father.[3]

Will

Richard's will was dated 1 Jun 1588 and proved on 12 Feb 1589.[8] He described himself as of East Sutton, Kent and referred to his home there. He requested that no black clothing be given for wearing at his funeral, and forbade all "vain jangling" at the service: the wordily pious first part of the will suggests he may have been of Puritan leanings. He referred to his son and heir (ie his eldest son) without naming him.

He named:

  • his wife Mary
  • (in this order) his younger sons John, Reinolde, Richard and Samuell
  • (in this order) his daughters Margarett, Marie, Katherin, Jane and Sarah
  • his brother(-in-law) John Baker (husband of Katherine Scott, sister of his second wife)
  • his friend Peter Osborne

His will was probated on 12 Feb 1588 in Canterbury, Kent, England.[9]

I have added information from his will, and done a little other minor editing. This profile would benefit from a substantial overhaul when someone has time.

From the biography and from other sites, Mary Scott was his second wife, do we know his first wife? Also, the one source has her as his first wife and that information is pasted into this profile, which is incorrect.

Argall-30 and Argall-6 appear to represent the same person because: I believe 1536 to be correct birth date. See my addition to Notes.

Argall-30 and Argall-58 appear to represent the same person because: These appear to be the same person, though DOBs are different. The DOB you have is probably accurate, because it would have his marriage at age 24, which was normal.
