Biography

Note: This Butts Bacon, not titled, must be distinguished from his uncle Butts Bacon (1580-1661), First Baronet Bacon of Mildenhall, son of Sir Nicholas Bacon First Baronet of Redgrave. The wife of the first Butts Bacon was Dorothy Warner. The wife of this Butts Bacon was Dorothy Tracy, who has often been confused with her sister Katherine, as well as the elder Butts Bacon's wife.

Butts Bacon - 6th son of Sir Robert Bacon, 3rd Bt Bacon of Redgrave and his wife Anne Peyton. He was baptised 22 January 1610/11 at St Andrews, Great Ryburgh Norfolk, [1], the principal residence of his father.

On 3 April 1648, Butts Bacon married Dorothy, eldest daughter of Sir John Tracy of Stanhoe, near Stiffkey, Norfolk. [2] There was one child of the marriage, son Robert Bacon, who would succeed as 5th Bt. of Redgrave on 12 September 1685, following the death of his cousin the 4th Bt, Sir Edmund Bacon.[3]

Robert Bacon was born. c. 1651 and died 31 January 1704. He was married 18 February 1673/4 to Sarah, daughter of Daniel Chandler of London, and had a numerous issue.[3]

Butts Bacon died January 1662 and was survived by his widow. [3] [4]

Research Note:

The name of Butts Bacon's wife has been confused, sometimes listed as Katherine, sometimes as "unknown". The records, however, show that she was Dorothy Tracy.[2]

Sir John Tracy, in his Will PROB 11/314/148, proved 26 May 1664 Will, mentions his wife Elizabeth, underaged son Robert, unmarried daughter Katherine Tracy, and "daughter Bacon" who had clearly already received her portion at her earlier marriage. Given the date of this marriage in 1648, this daughter Dorothy Bacon would clearly be the oldest child - even conceivably the child of an earlier, unknown marriage. Her birthdate would be estimated about 1630.

The Butts Bacon referred to in the sentence of this profile is Bacon-6097 of Mildenhall, whose wife was Dorothy Warner, not this Butts Bacon.
