Biography

Sir Butts Bacon was the 7th son of Sir Nicholas Bacon, 1st Baronet of Redgrave, and his wife Anne Butts, after whose family he was named.[1] He was baptised at Redgrave 24 May 1580. [2] [3]

On 4 July 1611, at his father's seat at Culford, Suffolk, he married Dorothy, widow of Robert Jermyn and daughter of Sir Henry Warner of Mildenhall, Suffolk. [4] [2] [1] [5]

The marriage produced three sons and two daughters: [6] [2]

(Sir) Henry (Butts) - Only surviving son and heir - b. c. 1615, d. 1671, m. 8 December 1643 Barbara Gooch
Charles - d. unmarried
Clement - d. unmarried
Anne - firstborn child - b. 6 July 1612, [7] d. 1667, m. Henry Kitchingman
Dorothy - m. William Peck

At about this time, Butts Bacon possessed a residence at Blundeston in Suffolk, near Ashby, for which the family appears to have had some attachment, as Sir Butts and his lady were both buried in the parish church of St Mary there, and his eldest daugher Anne married Henry Kitchingham of Blundeston Hall.

On 29 July 1627, Butts Bacon was created 1st Baronet Bacon of Mildenhall.[1]

At the outbreak of the Civil War, Sir Butts Bacon, like most Suffolk Bacons, was an active Parliamentarian. He was named a chairman of the County Committee (on which seven Bacons were members) [8] and served as the captain of a militia company, 1644-45.[2]

Sir Butts Bacon died 29 May 1661, perhaps at his house at Herringfleet, and was buried 31 May at the church of St Mary in Blundeston, where there is a memorial inscription. [9]

His Will, styled as "of Heringfleet", was dated 18 March 1660 and proved at Norwich on 30 January 1661/2.[1]
