Biography

Sir Robert Bacon was the 4th son of Sir Nicholas Bacon, 1st Baronet Bacon of Redgrave, and his wife Anne Butts. He was baptised on 4 May 1574 at Redgrave, Suffolk. [1] At the death of his father in 1624, he inherited the ancestral estate of Great Ryburgh in Norfolk,[2] which remained his primary residence and the burial place of his family.[3]

At the death of his brother Sir Edmund Bacon, 2nd Bt, without issue, Sir Robert Bacon succeeded to the title as 3rd Bt. Bacon of Redgrave on 10 April 1649.[4] [3]

Contrary to some accounts, this Robert Bacon was not returned as an MP.

Marriage and family

Sir Robert Bacon married twice, but had issue only with his first wife, Anne Peyton, daughter of Sir John Peyton, 1st Bt, of Isleham in Cambridgeshire and his wife Alice Osborne. The marriage was 22 June 1598 in Isleham.[5] [6]

The children of the union were nine sons and three (four?) daughters, but of the sons most either died young or pre-deceased him without issue.[1] [3] The first few were born and baptised at their mother's home of Isleham:

Nicholas - bp. Isleham 13 May 1599 [7]; m. Margaret Hobart of Thwaite, no issue; bur. Great Ryburgh, 23 December 1630, no issue.
Edmund - bp. Isleham 13 March 1599/1600 [8]; died young.
Robert - bp. 16 September 1602; [9] m. Catherine daughter of Grave Violet 31 December 1627; [10] d. before his father on 15 August 1652 and was buried at Redgrave. Robert Bacon's only surviving son, Edmund, succeeded at 4th Bt. of Redgrave.
Nathaniel - bp. Great Ryburgh 6 March 1603/4;[11] d. May 1647, no issue.[12]
Anne - bp. Great Ryburgh 7 October 1604; m. Thomas Hunt of Sharington
Henry - bp. Great Ryburgh 28 February 1606/7; [13] died young 10 February 1610/11.[14]
Elizabeth - at Great Ryburgh, bp. and bur. (12 November) young 1608 [15] [16]
Butts - bp. Great Ryburgh 22 January 1610/11; [17] m. Dorothy, daughter of Sir John Tracey; [18]; d. January 1662.
Francis - bp. Great Ryburgh 15 February 1611/2; [19] d. young.
Alice - bp. Great Ryburgh[20] m. Richard Gwyn; d. after 1655.
Drury - bp. Great Ryburgh 26 May 1615; [21] d. unmarried.
Philippa - bp. Great Ryburg 30 September 1616; [22] m. Hammond Claxton (1624-71) of Great Livermere Suffolk.
Peyton - bp. 21 June 1620; [23] m. Elizabeth daughter of Charles Suckling, had issue.

Anne Peyton Bacon died September 1640 and was buried, according to the inscription, at Great Ryburg on 27 September.

Sir Robert Bacon afterward married secondly to a Katherin ___, but little is known of her.

Succession

Sir Robert Bacon did not live long to enjoy his baronetcy. During this time, the financial position of the estate was eroding, with numerous children to provide for and with the depredations of the Civil War. Dependents and tenants were unable to pay their rents, and valuable estates had to be sold.[24]

Sir Robert Bacon died in 1655 and was buried alongside his first wife Dame Anne Bacon at Ryburgh, where there is the memorial inscription: Sir Robert Bacon, of Redgrave, in the county of Suffolk, Bt. deceased Dec. 16, 1655, and Dame Anne, his wife, the 27, of Sept. 1640. [2]

Of all his sons, only one, Butts Bacon, survived Sir Robert. He inherited the estate of Great Ryburgh at Sir Robert's death in 1655. The baronetcy and the estate of Redgrave passed to Edmund, the only living son of eldest surviving son Robert Bacon, who predeceased the baronet in 1652. Sir Edmund succeeded in 1655 as 4th Baronet Bacon of Redgrave. [4] [2]

Cokayne asserts that Robert Bacon was MP for St Ives in 1621-22, but The History of Parliament Online says it was a different, distantly related Robert Bacon.
