Biography

Evidence to confirm that the Jane in this profile baptised 15 Feb 1624 is the same one who married Matthew Gilbert is needed and for now should be treated with caution. Jane Gilbert as Matthew's wife is named in her brother John Baker's Will which was proved in England on 13 Jun 1664 and although he does not give a residence, reading who John mentions suggests that it was in London.^[1]

Jane was the daughter of JOHN & ANN BAKER, she was baptised on Feb. 15, 1624 in Surrey, England. She married MATTHEW GILBERT who became Dep. Gov. of the Colony of New Haven and was one of the seven pillars of the government and a deacon of the First Church of Christ in New Haven. He served as Justice of the Peace in New Haven and married many, many couples there. Matthew & Jane lived on the southwest corner of the New Haven Green.
