John was buried at the North Road Cemetery in Nailsworth, South Australia on 6 April 1923.[5]
The following obituary was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Express, on 3 April 1923:[6]
There will be general regret felt concerning the death of Mr. John Warren Bakewell, a well-known and highly respected South Australia, which occurred at his home, Konalla, (sic) Mount Lofty, on Tuesday morning, Mr. Bakewell, who was in his 77th year, was the elder son of Mr. William Bakewell, a former Crown Solicitor and Crown Prosecutor of South Australia, who died in 1870.
Mr. J. W. Bakewell was born at Adelaide, and received his early education at St. Peter's College. He continued his studies at St. John's College, Cambridge, and graduated in law with honors. Subsequently the degree of master of arts was conferred upon him by the same University. He was a director of the South Australian Company for a great number of years, and had business interests in India and the Malay States, where he was connected with tea and rubber enterprises. During a long period of his life, Mr. J. W. Bakewell made frequent visits to England. His widow is at present in England, but as the English winter climate did not suit her husband's health he seldom stayed there during the cold period of the year. Thus he happened to be in South Australia and his wife in England when he was stricken by his last illness.
Mr. J. W. Bakewell was the only brother of Mr. Leonard W. Bakewell, of the old firm of Messrs. Bakewell, Stow & Piper, solicitors, of Adelaide (now Messrs. Piper, Bakewell & Piper). His sisters were Mrs. Walter Reynell and Mrs. R. A. Hankey (mother of Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Maurice Hankey, G.C.B., secretary to the Imperial Cabinet since 1919 and formerly secretary of the British War Cabinet and the Imperial War Cabinet), and of Lieutenant Donald Hankey, author of "'The Student in Arms," and Messrs. J. R. Gurner, of Walkerville, whose son is now manager of the Reynella vineyard. The two first-named sisters died some years ago. There are two daughters of Mr. J. W. Bakewell. One is Mrs. A. P. Evelyn O'Leary, wife of Dr. O'Leary, and protagonist of the movement for the prevention of cruelty to animals in this State. Mrs. O'Leary is at present in England. The other daughter is Mrs. Roger Gould, of Christchurch, New Zealand.
Mr. Bakewell was a man of high scholastic attainments, and he identified himself with every movement for the benefit of the State. He had a mathematical brain, and was deeply interested in that science. He was a keen sportsman and he had hunted big game in Northern India, and he possessed many trophies won as an oarsman at Cambridge. He had mastery of legal knowledge, and held a high place in his profession. Although he never entered public life he was always ready to give such assistance as was in his power to those engaged in political work with which he sympathised. He had a host of friends, and he was held in great esteem by all who knew him.
