Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
William Barbee was a Virginia colonist.

William Barbee was born about 1660 in Middlesex, Virginia to parents John Barbee and Ann Jousa Miller.[citation needed] The family descended from French Hugenots. The name was originally spelled Barbey. He married Elizabeth Beaumont about 1680 in Middlesex, Virginia. Children: William, Hannah, John, Ann, George.

William, is described in the 1715 Vestry Book for Middlesex Co., as an "intelligent, honest freeholder," and he was appointed to procession the lands in lower Middlesex Co. on behalf of the local vestry.[1]

On 5 Jan. 1720/1 William, "made out his will-- the will being proved in court exactly one month later."[2]

He died before 5 Feb 1720/1 in Middlesex, Virginia. An inventory of his estate was ordered on March 7th and the majority of the appraising was completed by the 4th of April. The original inventory filled eleven pages. "Each room of William's house was inventoried separately. In addition he owned 2 horses, 29 head of cattle, 25 sheep, 41 pigs, 10 slaves, and had crops of tobacco, corn, peas, and beans. Total value of the personal estate was £459. 0s. 5 1/4p. He also had an unknown sum of money on account with William Dawkins in London."[3]

"The Barbee DNA Project is producing information which is useful in directing further genealogy research. We have determined that the early Andrew and William Barbee lines are NOT related. This means that there are at least 2 distinct Barbee lines that have different DNA patterns in the U.S. and that a DNA test will show whether you are related to one of these two lines."[4]

Research Notes

The connected mother would have been 11 years old when he was born. Possibly William was born later, but his attached father died the year after he was born, so he could not have been born much later. A source is needed for his parentage. Also, the bio says he descended from French Hugenots, but the attached parents were English.

Barbee-889 and Barbee-119 do not represent the same person because: Father and son

Barbee-889 and Barbee-119 appear to represent the same person because: same people

Somehow a wife named Mary Gray has been merged in and I don't have record of Mary Gray. Marriage date falls in the same time frame when he was married with Elizabeth Beaumont. She's either a mistake or we have a error in merges OR my research is faulty but I'm pretty sure mine is correct. Any ideas or further information on this is requested. Thx, Mindy

According to the very good genealogy by Roderic L. Mullen, Ph. D. entitled Lynn, Barbee, Miller, et.al. and Allied Families of Durham, Orange and Wake Counties, North Carolina, Mary Gray was William's second wife who gave him six more children.

Barbee-517 and Barbee-119 appear to represent the same person because: same birth, one profile in write up says between 1650 and 1660, the other says about 1660, same wife and child
