Joshua Bates was born in Hingham on 14 Aug 1671, the son of Joseph and Ester (Hilliard) Bates[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
On 15 Jan 1695/96, he married Rachel Tower, the daughter of Ibrook and Margaret (Hardin) Tower also of HIngham[2][3][4][5][6][7][8].
Their children included:
Rachel, born July 4, 1696, who married Andrew Beal December 14, 1715[2][4][5]
Joshua, born June 15, 1698, who married Abigail Joy December 28, 1721[2][4][6]
Bathsheba, born Feb 9, 1699, who married Joseph Clark[2] on July 30, 1731[4]
Elizabeth, born November 23, 1703, who married Ebenezer Woodward October 8, 1724[2][4]
Solomon, born April 13, 1706, who married Deborah Whiton and lived in Chesterfield Mass[2][4]
Isaac, born March 3, 1707, who married Martha Clark December 28, 1732[2][4]
Jacob, born August 20, 1710, who married Mary Clark November 19, 1730[2][4]
Some sources give the date of his death as April 1757[5][7], and others give September 23, 1757[4]. He is believed to have been buried in the Cohasset Central Cemetery, but the gravestone has not survived[9].
Joshua's will dated 7 February 1754 was proved October 14, 1757. In it he leaves bequests to his beloved wife Rachel, sons Joshua, Sollomon, Isaac and Jacob and daughters Rachell Beals, Elizabeth Woodward and Bathsheba Perry.[10]
