Biography

Note

  • This man is confused by some early genealogists with Joseph Beach(4), Benjamin(3) Azariah(2) Richard(1), who resided at Durham, Connecticut, whereas this Joseph Beach lived at Waterbury. Both Joseph's had sons named Joseph who have likewise been confused. See: THE BEACH FAMILY MAGAZINE, Vol. I, No. 3, pp. 60-61 for a discussion of this problem.

Birth

Joseph Beach, son of Nathan and Jemima, was born 10 June 1714 in Wallingford, Connecticut.[1][2][3]

Marriage

Joseph and Experience Beecher were married in Wallingford on the last of October 1734, by Mr. Hall.[4]

Death

Joseph died 25 Jul 1795 in Waterbury, New Haven, Connecticut.[5] Son, Joseph, was administrator of his intestate estate, which includes a court ordered distribution to Lydia, eldest daughter, Joel, second son and Sarah, youngest daughter. It appears these were to "even" earlier advances.[6]

Waterbury

Joseph Beach was one of the pioneers of the Waterbury area known as East Farms: Hog Pound, where as the name implies they early kept pigs. Joseph Jr. became a large landowner.[7]

In 1749, on the road to Farmington, Joseph Beach and Cornelius Johnson were given liberty to advance three rods into the highway for 30 rods. They built their houses there and two years later, the land was conferred to them.[7]

Joseph kept a tavern during the Revolution.[7]

The burying ground, now called East Farms, was sold by Joseph Beach to the town for fifteen shillings, 28 April 1780. Described as “in my meadow, a little southwest of my dwelling house, The oldest inscribed stone is that of Joseph's wife Experience who died 20 Sept 1789.[7]

27 Feb 1792 a seating of the first Society in Waterbury taken in December last: As part of the first Dignity on the west side, Joseph Beach. Joseph Beach Jr. was in the 2d Dignity.[8]
