THOUGHTS: My Bennetts best known to me are from Guilford Maine. Wondered how they got there and in researching Isaac (born 1741) I found out the answer! Small settlements were begun in the area known as Guilford, by the waters that powered mills. Three of his teenage sons , Isaac born 1771, Nathaniel 1766 and John 1773 were the only Bennetts in Township 6 which became Guilford. In February of 1806, a Mr. Low and Mr. Herring and their families moved to Guilford along with Isaac (1741) and his three sons, but Isaac (1741) returned to New Gloucester and the sons (13, 12 and 11 or so) stayed in Guilford to tend to the land and the cow, which provided the boys with her milk along with the summer's stores of hulled corn, wheat to boil, and potatoes. Isaac then returned to Guilford as their new home; thus, the Bennetts of Guilford! For more about the beginnings of Guilford, please see: http://guilford.mainememory.net/page/1825/display.html

Birth When Isaac Bennett was born on June 8, 1741, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, his father, Anthony Bennett, was 27 and his mother, Susanna Haskell was 29. He married Dorcas Wharff on September 30, 1762, in his hometown. They had seven children in 11 years.

MARRIED TO DORCAS WHARFF IN 1762 Isaac Bennett married Dorcas Wharff in Gloucester, Massachusetts, on September 30, 1762, when he was 21 years old. She lived to 1810.

After the Revolution, Isaac and two of his brothers--Moses and Jonathan--moved from Gloucester, Mass to New Gloucester, Maine. Children of three sons of of Isaac 1741--Isaac 1771, Nathaniel 1766 and John 1773-- are described in the following excerpt--another 3 brothers story. in the census of 1810 they were the only Bennetts in Township 6 which became Guilford; The brothers of Isaac 1741--Moses and Jonathan-- were still living in New Gloucester, Maine.

Guilford township was one of those conveyed to Bowdoin College by Massachusetts. Robert Low, Jr., was the first settler, moving in with his family in 1806; and Robert Herring, Jr., came about three weeks later. Isaac, Nathaniel and John Bennett came soon after and made clearings and put up buildings. These first settlers, for want of a threshing floor, beat out their wheat upon a smooth, flat ledge. When winter came, the three Bennetts returned to their homes at New Gloucester for the winter, leaving their three boys, David, Joseph and Isaac, Jr.-aged, the two first thirteen years, and the other eleven.-to keep the house and attend to the cow. For food, the boys had milk, hulled corn, boiled wheat and roasted potatoes. In 1807 the families came permanently.

Isaac Bennett, who was in early life a seafaring man and a resident of New Gloucester, Me. ), settled in Guilford as a pioneer, and cleared a farm, upon which he resided for the rest of his life. Guilford is a town in Piscataquis County, Maine [4]
