The present-day town of Sherborn was originally settled by three or four families, the Woods, Holbrooks and Lelands, all from Dorchester, at which time the area was known by the Indian name, Boggistow. By 1662 there were fourteen families residing. The nearest village was Medfield, four miles away, and where until 1674 the inhabitants of Sherborn attended church. The first mention of the Brecks is found at Sherborn in 1656 when his daughter, Elinor married. His identity as the father of the following children seems to be established by a deed of Thomas Jones and John Richardson, who conveyed, in 1727, to John Breck of Sherborn their "whole right and title in the first and second divisions of Land laid out in Sherborn in the Right of John Breck late of Sherborn, dec'd.", also their "whole right and title in the third and fourth divisions of Land laid out in the Right of John Breck Sen, late of Sherborn dec'd.", Jones and Richardson having bought their right from the Heirs of Elener Crane late of Stow dec'd, the Natural sister to the aforesiad John Breck."
