Biography

I became interested in genealogy around 1975 or 1976. My maternal grandmother was planning to make a quilt for my first son, with a family tree on it, and needed my son's ancestors on his Father's side. She started telling me about my ancestors on hers and grandpa's sides. I quickly grabbed some paper that was nearby and scribbled down the information. I still have that and it is very meaningful to me.

I did nothing with genealogy until about 2010 or so. I've been working on it sporadically since then. In the last few years I have been working on it more often and for longer periods of time.

Descendant
Descendant of Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Thank you, Mark. Is Nicholas a Gray?

Excellent work, Gwen. I've added John's birthdate and the source you provided. Would love to learn more about Elizabeth Gray and how she relates to Nicholas, who moved from Ireland to New York City and then to western New York as an officer during the War of 1812, before moving to Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Gwen, thanks for your note. Rest assured, the Ancestry.com birth records for John Shaw (1724 - 1795) of West Lothian, Scotland have clearly been intermingled with the Irish Shaws in error. The Irish Shaws played a well-documented role in the Irish Rebellion of 1798, and they were friends of Nicholas Gray, possible relative to Elizabeth (Gray) Shaw, who is certainly not identical to Elizabeth (Mitchel) Shaw.

Gwen, to be more specific: John Shaw's profile (Shaw-10442) has a birth date estimated at 1771. His birthplace is given as Ireland based on Edward Manning's "History of the County of Orange" (1875), p. 409, which clearly identifies the brothers as Irish, not Scottish. Ancestry.com certainly keys John to Scottish birth records -- but their database name match proves nothing, given a name as common as John Shaw. I went with the earlier 1875 source, which clearly identifies the local Orange County Shaws as Irish, a fact confirmed by census records. See also the tombstone of Robert Tennent Shaw, which clearly references the Irish Rebellion, and the biography of William James Shaw (a grandson). He's a primary source, and gives the oral history of Col. John Shaw's participation in the Irish Rebellion.

Thanks for adding your ancestors on WikiTree! There can be a bit of a learning curve to WikiTree, but once you figure it out, it is a great place to interact with other family historians.

By the way - I notice that you are using Family Search as your source on these profiles. As we are a collaborative tree, it would be a great help if you could be a bit more explicit about your sources. For instance: If these are from a family bible or work done by another family member that you inherited or a birth or death certificate, giving specifics will help others know where the information comes from. Anything would be helpful.

Here is what our Sources help page says. It has lots of ideas: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sources.

My advice is to find more records, especially the burial record of your James Wells that is listed in that 1850 Ohio or Michigan's census. There may be local historical records and death records for him there but you can't connect him to just any James Wells born in New York without sources. I will try to help you find your New York Wells origins but it will take time (-:

Can you explain why you attach the father that was removed?

Hi Gwen, re: Austen Wells as the father of James Well. The sources on his profile has his father as Israel Wells. Do you have a source for the change? I see he had been removed twice already. Thanks asap.
