Edward Brooks was born in Middleton by Wirksworth, Derbyshire on 28 August 1814 and christened on 14 September 1814 in Wirksworth, Derbyshire[1][2]; the son of Thomas Brooks and Mary (Allen) Brooks.
Edward married Mary Stone at the Collegiate Church, Manchester (later Manchester Cathedral) on 3 December 1839[3]; they had the following children:
Edward, b. 1840[4], christened on 29 November 1840 at All Saints, Youlgreave, Derbyshire
Mary Hannah, 1843-1864[5], christened on 9 July 1843, in Elton, Derbyshire (family residing in Youlgreave at the time);[6]
John William, b.1847[7], christened on 12 September 1847 at St. Michael’s and All Angels, Middleton by Youlgreave, Derbyshire
Sarah, b.1850[8], christened on 12 September 1850 at St. Michael’s and All Angels, Middleton by Youlgreave, Derbyshire
Eliza(beth), b.1853[9], christened on 24 February 1859 at St. Michael’s and All Angels, Middleton by Youlgreave, Derbyshire
George Thomas, b.1859[12], christened on 24 February 1859 at St. Michael’s and All Angels, Middleton by Youlgreave, Derbyshire
At the time of the 1841 Census, Edward (aged 27yrs) is living with his wife Mary (aged 26yrs) and baby son Edward (one year old) in Caldwell End, Youlgreave, Bakewell, Derbyshire[13]
At the time of the 1851 Census, Edward (aged 38yrs) is living with his wife Mary (aged 36yrs) and children Edward (10yrs), Mary Hannah (7yrs), John William (4yrs) and Sarah (not yet one year old) in , Town Street, Middleton, Derbyshire [14]
At the time of the 1861 Census, Edward (aged 50yrs) is living with his wife Mary (aged 50yrs) and children Edward (20), Mary Hannah (18), John William (14), Sarah (11) and George Thomas (3) in Hill Side, Middleton, Derbyshire [15]
At the time of the 1871 Census, Edward (aged 56yrs) is living with his wife Mary (aged 55yrs) and children Sarah (23) and George Thomas (12) in Middleton, Derbyshire [16]. Also living with them are their two grandsons Edward Brooks (aged 7 years)[17] and Samuel (1 year old)[18]
At the time of the 1881 Census, Edward (aged 66 years), now a widower, is living in Middleton-by-Wirksworth, Derbyshire with his grandson Samuel Brooks. Edward, surprisingly, registers his birthplace as Mayfield, Staffordshire[19]
