"Jan (John) Brokaw was baptized Nov 14, 1680 in the Flatbush Dutch Church, Long Island, New York, and died Oct 16, 1740 around the age of 60.
He married Sara Teunis Van Middleswart in 1704. She was baptized Feb 1, 1685 in Six Mile Run, New Jersey, the daughter of Jan Teunisen Denyse/Van Middlesward and Catalyntje Teunisen Bogart. She died in 1748 in Six Mile Run, New Jersey. John Brokaw went with his parents to Somerset County, New Jersey in 1702. He apparently lived in the vicinity of Raritan, New Jersey, as most of his children were born there. On Jul 17, 1725, he purchased 3000 acres of land on the east side of the south branch of the Raritan River from Peter Somans, and settled near Millstone. On Aug 30, 1725, he was a yeoman and Commissioner of the Peace. He erected a log house on the new land in which he and his family lived, until he erected another house in 1734. This house still stood in 1909." [1]
There is an abstract of a estate of John Brokaw, Somerset, NJ dated 14 Nov 1740, Inventory mentions land incl 300 acres on Millstone River, and 212 acres where "Bergone Brokaw" now lives. There were eight slaves listed by name. Plus bonds of various named persons like "Uncle Peter" and a Mary Covert.
3 Aug 1741 renounced re her late husband's will in favour of their son John Brokaw.
