Malcolm was born in 1839 in Ontario, Canada. He was the son of Phillip Bruner and Mary Ann Munger . His family came to Winnebago County in 1849. [1]
Civil War
Malcolm enlisted with the Wisconsin 18th Infantry, Co. B in 1861. He was transferred to Co. K in 1862. In 1863 he achieved Captain. He mustered out in 1865.[2][3][4][5][6][7]

Relatives and friends in Rockford have received word that Malcolm Bruner passed away in the National Hospital at Washington D.C., yesterday where he has been care for during the past few months.
Mr. Bruner lived many years in Rockford at North Henrietta Avenue. He was born in Gosfield, Canada, April 16, 1839, coming to Illinois with his parents when but a boy. The family settled in Harlem, Winnebago County, where his father Philip Bruner, purchased a farm from the Government. At the beginning of the Civil War he went to Monroe, Wisconsin, where he enlisted and assisted in recruiting Company K, of the 18th Wisconsin Infantry.
After spending four years in the war where he participated in many of the hardest fought battles of the rebellion he returned to Harlem and mustered out.
After teh war Mr. Bruner entered Beloit College and later followed farming.
For a number of years before his health failed him he was engaged as a traveling salesmen with the late Henry W. Price, glove manufacturer in this city. His wife died July 10th of this year. He is survived by one son, Elmer H. Bruner of Chicago; two daughters, Mrs. B. N. Branch, Chicago and Mrs. F.A. Curtiss, Detroit, Mich., two sisters, Mrs. Julia A. Hyer and Mrs. Judson Sweeney of this city. There are frou brothers surviving. They are August, Orlando and Anderson of Indianapolis, Ind., and Myron of this city. [14]
