Biography

Mary was born on 5 Oct 1778 in Albemarle County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Charles Burrus and Elizabeth Dickerson. She died on 20 Sep 1846 in Bowling Green, Fayette County, Illinois, United States. [1] She was interred in Antioch Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinios, United States. [1] The tombstone suggests Mary was born circa 1783 as long as she was only "Aged 63 years" at the time of her death. [1]

"The widow and children and two sons-in-law moved to and arrived at a house that had been built east of the Joe Whittington place on the old James Beck farm. Cass Sarver had preceded them and arranged for them to move in. So on their arrival the night before Christmas, 1833, they moved in. The house was covered, had a puncheon floor, a fire place and a chimney built up to the mantel. The house had been chinked but not dobbed. It snowed a five-inch snow the night they arrived, and one snow fell on top of another and they never saw the ground until in March. The moss and grass were so deep and long that the deer and turkeys almost starved. They could go out most any morning and kill a deer or turkey before breakfast. Her boys and sons-in-law took up a puncheon, dug up some dirt and heated some water to make mud mortar and dobbed the house on the inside: then all lived in that house until the next spring when John Sarver and his wife moved to the Dick Burrus farm, as it was known in later years, and Jacob Miller and wife moved to a farm that was later known as the Miller Neck."
