Richard Burt, Jr., was born about 1629 (he was age 56 when he wrote his 1685 will)[1][2][3] probably in Caundle Marsh, Dorset, England, and was the son of Richard Burt, of Dorchester, England, and his wife Jane, née Adams. Richard was baptized on 9 Jan 1628 in Melbury Osmond, Dorset, England.
He left Barbados, West Indies, for Massachusetts in 1639.[4] His family had settled in Taunton, Bristol Co., Massachusetts by 1639.[5]
Guardianship
When his father, Richard Burt, died sometime before 26 October 1647,[5] the under-aged Richard Jr. chose his uncle, James Burt, as his guardian.
[6] The choice of guardian was confirmed by the court.
[7] Burt and Burt in their book Early Days in New England... cite Plymouth Court Records, 26 October 1647: "The Court ordereth, upon pet'con of Richard Burt the sonne of Richard Burt deceased, late of Taunton, that ye said Richard Burt shall mak choyse of his owne guardian; & whereas he makes choyse of his vuncle James Burt to be guardian vnto him & to liue wth him during his minority, the Court app'ues of his choyse & confermes the same."[5]
Marriage and Family
Richard married Charity Hall (1635–1711) in 1657 likely in Taunton.[8][9]
It is assumed, but not confirmed, that Richard was buried at the Neck of Land Cemetery in Taunton, MA.[11]
Will
His will was signed on 7 September 1685 and proved 29 October 1685. A transcription of the will was published by Burt and Burt in 1893.[1] Richard's will and estate inventory can be found on FamilySearch.[2]
Birth. A record of his birth or baptism has either not been found or not been proven. A version of this profile reported he was both,
baptized in Marsh Caundle, Dorset, England, 9 June 1628, without further reference. One presumes such a baptismal record exists, but any related work to prove this is about the immigrant has not been seen.
born in Barbados, West Indies, 1629, citing "Dorothy Burt GEDCOM, Burt.FTW." Again, the work to prove he was born at Barbados has not been seen.
Parentage. Richard was the son of Richard Burt (bef.1583-bef.1647), who died before 26 October 1647,[7] but the identity of his mother, the elder Richard's wife, is either unknown or unproven.
His mother is sometimes reported as "Jane Adams" (for example, see FindAGrave, memorial 49052325). This name and the related 1625 marriage was presumably plucked from abstracted London, England records published in 1891. See John V. L. Pruyn. Weddings at St. Mary, Whitechapel, London. In: The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, 23 (1891):47; digital images, Hathi Trust, for a marriage at St Mary, Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets, Middlesex, England, 21 November 1625.

This is the birth record which has spawned the erroneous birthplace of Marsh Caundle (Bishop's Caundle is half a mile away). This Richard's father was William which rules him out from being the immigrant.
Wonderful!, just wonderful Thank you, Matthew Fletcher.
Possibly of note, see remarks on the intended passage to end points that include Barbados for a William Burt, age 22 in 1634 and James Burt, age 15 in 1635. Roderick Burnham, Genealogical records of Henry and Ulalia Burt, the emigrants who early settled at Springfield, Mass. ... (Warwick, N.Y. : Miss Elizabeth Burt, 1892); 13-14 (Early New England Records, includes some Barbados); digital images, Hathi Trust.
Thank you again.--Gene
Edited to add. The baptismal date is just off a bit. Is there a way we can confirm no such record existed in the other location?
Matthew, you are very likely right. The original parish register image at ancestry.com (available free here https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/27609652?h=d7c2d6) shows the month as November...but it is abbreviated "9br". There is a "7br" (September) and "8br" (October) lower down on the same page, for some reason just a few on this and the facing page are abbreviated, the rest have the month written out. Ancestry has this record search-indexed as both September and October but to my eyes, it's "9br".
Edit: as Matthew points out, this looks more like 'Fbr' than '9br' based on comparing to other abbreviations on the page.
Yes this record may have been misread by everyone. It think it actually says Fbr [February] which came before 1629 because their new year began on 25 March. There are some examples of Febr in the second column which look similar. The father Will. Birt is not very clear but you can see another entry from 1627 for Mary daughter of William Birt.
That's very possible, on the facing page is a 'Fbr' abbreviation for christening of James, son of Robert Bay and the '9' for the day on Richard Birt's christening looks different than the first character of the month. So 'February' may be the best interpretation. This was one inconsistent cleric.
At any rate, at least we can see the father's name clearly as William meaning it's not the christening record of Richard Jr. who ended up in Taunton. I'm in the middle of looking at a bunch of Burt wills, land deeds and court records trying to find a family structure that matches what little we know of this line. There were clusters of Burts around Bishop's Caundle, around Dorking (Surrey), Horsham and Cuckfield along with some weavers in London. It would be really helpful if we could find more Barbados records to better identify which Burts were there.
His profile reports a birth "before 9 Jun 1628 in Marsh Caundle, Dorset, England."
Hope to identify the reliable sources which records, reasoning and logic were relied and how this apparent English baptismal entry was proven to be specifically about the man who had a father Richard Burt (died before 26 October 1647) and uncle James Burt (died before March 1680[/1]), and who died Taunton, Massachusetts, 1685.
The NEHGR 54:91 linke (Colket cites this too) theorizes that wife Charity was a daughter of John Gallop and that maybe he was related to Humphre Gallop of Dorchester and many Taunton settlers came from Dorchester. So...guilt by 3rd party association it would seem but hardly proof of Dorchester origins. Interestingly, Pope in "Pioneers of Mass" p. 82 https://archive.org/details/pioneersofmassac00pope/page/82/mode/2up describes an Edward Burt of Charlestown who traded with Barbados. An a bunch of Burts show up buried & married in Barbados at St. John & St. MIchael churches in the 1660 through 1680s including Richard, William and Tobias (burials) and another RIchard marriage. Doesn't seem to be an Edward Burt WT profile and no entry in Great Migration Directory (there is an Edward Burton of charlestown who both Pope & Anderson show as a different person)
Based on Matthew Fletcher's comment, do we add a new profile for James Burt, son of William, or just work to update this profile of Richard^2 Burt, son of Richard^1? --Gene
Maybe not so fast ... The baptismal date is just off a bit. Is there a way we can confirm no such record existed in the other location?
My opinion would be to not add another pair of profiles (the father/son duo of William and Richard Birt of Bishop's Caundle). We don't know anything else about them so unless we want to go to the effort of fleshing out the family structure, whether the emigrated etc, I wouldn't bother at this point. If we find more data that points us to this location, or to Richardt Sr. having a brother William that seems a likely match then we've got the data already noted here to start those profiles. Trying to focus on PGM priorities first.
