Biography

Francis Bushnell was born 1608/9 to Francis Bushnell and Ferris (Quenell) Bushnell. He was baptized 8 January 1609 in Horsham, Sussex, England.

He married Mary Grombridge, daughter of Thomas Grombridge, 27 June 1631 in Horsham, Sussex, England. They had eight children - the first two were born in England:

  1. Mary 1632;
  2. Elizabeth abt 1634;
  3. Sarah abt 1636,
  4. John abt 1638;
  5. Martha abt 1640;
  6. Mary abt 1642;
  7. Hannah abt 1644;
  8. Samuel abt 1646.

The Bushnell family arrived in Boston on the "Planter" in 1635; they appeared on the manifest as Francis Bushnell, age 26; Maria (Mary) Bushnell also 26; and Martha [Elizabeth Bushnell], age 1.

"Theis pties heereunder mentioned are to be transported to New England, imbarqued in the "Planter", Nicholas Trarice, Master, bound thither. They have brought certificates from the Justices of Peace and Minister of the parish that they are conformable to the orders of ye Church of England, and are no subsidy men; they have taken the oath of supremacie and allegeance, die and ano prede."

Francis and Mary lived in Boston, and in Salem, Massachusetts, for a few years before arriving in Guilford. Francis was a carpenter and miller, and eventually had charge of the town mill in Guilford after the death of Thomas Norton in 1648.

Before 1660, he removed to Saybrook and built the first corn mill there. He also became deacon of the Church. When he left Guilford, he deeded his Guilford properties to his son-in-law Deacon William Johnson.

Deacon Francis Bushnell died 4 December 1681 in Saybrook, Connecticut at 72 years of age.

Torrey (p. 125) shows the m. of Frances [sic] Bushnell to "Grace (Wells) [Norton]" but does not give a date; see https://books.google.com/books?id=mOgK8dM9qqUC&pg=PA125&lpg=PA125#v=onepage&q&f=false . NEHGS accepts the 1945 "Bushnell Genealogy" (see Brad Stauf's comment below) and has the m. taking place "by 1660"; see https://www.americanancestors.org/DB1568/i/21174/259/426879473 (subscription) . These are fairly substantive secondary sources and I'd recommend adding Grace as a spouse.

Elaine F. Staplins, in The Connecticut Nutmegger, Vol. 24 (Dec. 1991), p. 442, "Saybrook Colony", names Grace (Wells) Norton as Francis's second wife, but the article is a transcript of a speech given to the CT Society of Genealogists and does not list sources. See: https://www.americanancestors.org/DB59/i/11789/442/0 (subscription).

Re: a second marriage to Grace Wells Norton, the Bushnell family genealogy (URL below) lists an entry in Winthrop's medical journal of 12 Feb 1669 treating "Bushnell, Grace, wife of Francis of Saybrooke". There is no explicit source listed for this Grace being Grace Wells widow of Thomas Norton but at least it gives some indication of a second marriage for Francis before 1669. https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89082470139&view=1up&seq=19

Nice cleanup of this biography Patricia. The links in the sources don't work for me though. Would be nice to have the info about the sources where the links should take us.
The sources section of this profile need cleaned up. It appears that after a merge was completed, information was retained but not cleaned up.
