Biography

Madeleine Capela was a Canadian First Peoples and member of the Mi'kmaq Nation.
Magdalena Capela (Caplan) was born after 1708.[citation needed]

Four Caplan Sisters

Magdalena Capela is one of four daughters of Guillaume Capela and Unknown Mi'kmaq.[1][2][3][4][5]
"Together they had four children. Three of these children (Marguerite, Catherine and Madeleine) are noted as being ancestors to a number of Acadian families in the Gaspésie area. [...] Madeleine Caplan [...] was a sister of Marguerite, Marie Louise, and Catherine."[1]
Biographical Note
The sisters Marguerite, Catherine, and Madeleine Caplan are the ancestors of many Acadian families in the Gaspé peninsula and in northern New Brunswick, including the Mallets, the Lanteignes, the Mailloux's, the Roussys, as well as certain branches of the Langlois, Duguay, and Albert families."[6]
According to White, "The sister relationships were determined by review of dispensations for marriages among their descendants.[7]

Name

She has been recorded under various names:
Magdalena Caplan, wife of Olivier Michel at bap. Marguerite David, Pabok,1753.
Marie Capelan and Jean Michel, living Grande-Riviere, parents of Mathurin Michel, 1773.
Magda Caplan, widow of Olivier Michel is mother of Francois Michel m. 1780
ERGO, Marie Capelan was Magda Caplan, as Magda Caplan was reported partner in 1753 and again in 1780 on both sides of the marriage of Mathurin.
Magdalena Capela is now more commonly known as Madeleine Caplan.

Marriage

There are three very different takes on her marriage and her children.
White, Landry, Jean estimate marriage about 1740, based on some assumptions.[8]
Comeau says they married by 1728. [9]
Martel says 1750, and offers and entirely different slate of children.[10]

Magdeleine m. Olivier Michel, six children

  • Marc-André Comeau, "Olivier Michel and Madeleine Capela were married since at least 1728.[11]
Children: Françoise, Marie, Michel, Mathurin, Pierre, Francois

Magdeleine was 2nd wife of Olivier Michel

  • Stephen A White, "[Madeleine Caplan] was married to Olivier Michel about 1740.[1]
  • Marcel W Landry, "1740 seems like a reasonable estimated if the first child Mathurin was born in 1741."[12]
  • Denis Jean, "Olivier Michel married Madaleine Caplan in1740 at Grande Rivierre"[13]
Children: Mathurin, Pierre, Francois.
  • At Our Gaspe Roots, the profile includes another son, Olivier Olivier-Michel.[5]
Children: Olivier, Mathurin, Pierre, Francois

Metis Gaspé

Genealogist Rejean Martel presents the list of her children that is markedly different.[14]
17- MICHEL ( Michel )
Olivier Michel né en 1726, fils de Francois Michel et de Marie Anne Léger, épousa en 1750 en en Acadie, Madeleine Caplan (Amérindienne) fille de Guillaume Caplan et de ( Indienne Micmac)
Enfants : Antoine – Étienne – Francois – Jean – Noel – Anastasie

Children

According to White (et al.), the maternity of Mathurin, Pierre, and François is clear; and of Marie, Michel, Françoise it may seem less clear.[1][2][3] Only Mallet offers Joseph and Antoine. Only Martel offers Anastasie.

Other Records

In the register for the baptism of her grandchild, Marguerite David, Magdeleine Caplan is listed as marraine (godmother).[5]
"Magdeleine Caplan, marraine de Marguerite David, rg Ste-Famille-de-Pabok, 15 jan. 1753."
Magdeleine Caplan is listed in the census of 1765.[citation needed]

Death

She passed away after 1780. (implied)[17]

Research Notes

Magdalena Capela is the declared E.K.A. of only three mtDNA testers at FTDNA reporting Hg=C1c. There are seven testers who have declared Françoise (Olivier) David as E.K.A., on the basis that Francoise was not the daughter of Magdalena. There are two mtDNA testers who have not declared an E.K.A. whose matrilineal pedigree ascends to Francoise and Magdalena.

Mallet's Child List

Here, Mallet argues in favor of Magdalena as the unique spouse of Olivier Michel, with the following offspring.
  • Joseph Olivier (abt. 1725). He is mentioned in Feb 1747, winning the cap des Rosiers for skating prowess. Citing Mimeault.
  • Françoise Olivier (abt. 1727). m. Jean David
  • Marie Michel (b. 1728, d. 1739)
  • Antoine Olivier m. Madeleine Larocque (d/o Charles Larocque). Issue Marie Madeleine Michel bap. 20 Jun 1784 Nipisiguit "parents, marraine, parrain, ... dits sauvages."
  • Mathurin Michel (abt. 1735 or 1741) m. Genevieve Cyr
  • Pierre Michel (abt. 1743). Deporte 1758.
  • Michel Olivier (b. abt. 1758, d. 14 Sep 1767) à Quebec
  • François Olivier-Michel m. Anne Cronier (1780 RgCarl)

Maternity of Françoise

Researchers and genealogists have long struggled over the question of the maternity of Françoise Michel dit Olivier. Her descendants have not.

Françoise, daughter of unknown Amerindienne

White, Mallet, and Jean propose that Francoise Olivier was the daughter of Olivier Michel and an unknown Amerindienne (rather than Magdeleine Caplan).

Françoise, daughter of Madeleine Caplan

Comeau, adroitly, attributes all of the children to Madeleine and Olivier Michel, with a compelling argument.[4] At Our Gaspe Roots, Aldo Brochet's notes state that "it has not been proven that Magdeleine Caplan is the mother of Francoise Olivier, but the probability is good."[5]
At issue, it seems, is a marriage record in 1740; thereby suggesting there was not an earlier marriage, or perhaps an unsanctioned marriage, a "country marriage".

DNA says

mtDNA matching lends credence to the proposition that Francoise Michel-dit-Olivier is the mtDNA Hg C1c daughter of Madeleine Caplan.
Jean-Pierre Gendreau-Hétu, Audrey Waltner, and Victorin Mallet have provided a catalog of mtDNA Triangulations (includes matrilineal lines of descent) for ten descendants of three of the Caplan sisters, including three descendants of Madeleine, through Françoise.[18]
To be clear, Francoise's mother shares mtDNA with Marguerite, Catherine, and Louise Caplan, meaning that they definitely share a common female ancestor. There are currently ten genealogical descendants of Magdeleine's daughter, Françoise, who have tested positive against each other, thereby proving their descent from Françoise; and, they have also tested positive against the descendants the Caplan sisters.
For a fuller picture of the mtDNA testing landscape, see the "Research Notes" in the profile of Unknown Mi'kmaq.

An Argument

Murray Maloney argues against White (et al.) and in favour of Comeau and the mtDNA evidence.
White gives with one hand and takes away with the other. On the question of including Louise in the Caplan sisterhood:
iii. Insofar as it is known, this is the only Caplan family that was settled along the lower Saint Lawrence River. It has thus been presumed that Marie-Louise must have belonged to it." - White
Insofar as we know, the Caplan family is the only available source for Francoise's descendants' Full Spectrum mtDNA Haplogroup C1c tests that are an exact match on CR & HVR1 & HVR2 with all the Caplan sisters' lines. It seems obvious that Françoise is so closely genetically related to the descendants of the Caplan sisters, because she is a descendant of a Caplan sister. We have no reason to believe that Françoise is the daughter of one of the other sisters; ergo, Francoise is the daughter of Madeleine Caplan, as her descendants have claimed all along.
On a more personal note, Maloney family tradition holds that Marie Josephe Becker (m. Wm Moloney) was the daughter of Marie Anne David (m. Jean Becker Dit Blondin, 1 Sep 1766) was the daughter of Francoise Olivier (m. Jean David) was the daughter of Magdeleine Caplan (m. Olivier Michel) was the daughter of an Amerindienne (probably Mi'kmaq) (m. Guillaume Capela).
Françoise was Magdalena Capela's daughter. Francoise had no mother other than Madeleine Caplan.
