Biography

Marguerite Caplan was a Canadian First Peoples and member of the Mi'kmaq Nation.

Marguerite was born about 1700-1704.[1]

Four Caplan Sisters

Marguerite Capela is one of four daughters of Guillaume Capela and Unknown Mi'kmaq.[2][3][4][5][6]

"Together they had four children. Three of these children (Marguerite, Catherine and Madeleine) are noted as being ancestors to a number of Acadian families in the Gaspésie area. [...] Madeleine Caplan [...] was a sister of Marguerite, Marie Louise, and Catherine."[2]

Biographical Note

The sisters Marguerite, Catherine, and Madeleine Caplan are the ancestors of many Acadian families in the Gaspé peninsula and in northern New Brunswick, including the Mallets, the Lanteignes, the Mailloux's, the Roussys, as well as certain branches of the Langlois, Duguay, and Albert families."[7]

According to White, "The sister relationships were determined by review of dispensations for marriages among their descendants.[8]

She married François Larocque (1700-1752) on 08 November 1720 in Louisbourg, Acadia, Nova Scotia, Canada.[citation needed]

In chronological order:[citation needed]
  1. Catherine, b. abt 1720
  2. Marie Madeleine, b. abt 1726
  3. Charles, b. abt 1728
  4. Jean, b. abt 1730
  5. Georges, b. abt 1736
On November 27, 1752, Marguerite Caplan and her husband both died by drowning at Pabos. Buried at Chandler Gaspé, Québec, Canada. "Drowned Origin: Métisse".[9][citation needed]

Research Notes

DNA

Marguerite Caplan is E.K.A. for 17 mtDNA testers at FTDNA, only 1 of whom have named her as E.K.A. All but one reports Hg=C1c; the singleton is an HVR2 test that reports Hg=C.
FrancoGene's catalog of C1c mtDNA Triangualtions includes lines of descent through all four Caplan sisters, with genealogical pedigrees of the testers.[10]
See also, the discussion of mtDNA Haplogroup C1c in the profile of Marguerite's mother, Unknown (Mi'kmaq) Caplan.
Reliable genealogists give [marriage date] about 1720 (Landry) or in 1719 (White and Reader) and no location. PRDH gives 6/15/1720 in Acadie with no marriage record attached. [11][12]

I noticed that Marguerite Caplan is listed as a 'a Canadian First Peoples and member of the MtDNA haplogroup C1c Nation' yet her sisters Catherine Caplan is listed as 'a Canadian First Peoples and member of the Mi'kmaq Nation' they share the same mother Unknown Mi'kmaq (Mi'kmaq-11), should all of the siblings be listed as members of the Mi'kmaq Nation?

Good observation. Actually I need to find out if we can put the DNA info in the sticker. Then we can make all their stickers the same. Thanks for your comment.

Les Registres de la Gaspésie p. 186 by Patrice Gallant identifies her as Marguerite who married Francois. He identifies Guillaume as having four children: Madeleine married Olivier Michel ;Marguerite married Francois, Catherine married Pierre Huard ; Louise married Jean Huard and Claude-Louis Lalande.
Caplan-34 and Caplan-26 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicates

I know that I have Mi'kmaq ancestry via my mother's bloodline (by maternal DNA), but never had any idea of who this came from. Due to DNA findings I can now feel certain that Marguerite Caplan is my direct ancestor! She appears in many multiple DNA connections. Now I have to work out the connections from the time of my many times great grandmother - Francisca Marie Prevost >(her son) Francis Pierre DuVernay>(his son) Michel Lucas Francis Duvernay>(his daughter) Mary E. Duvernay>(her daughter) Marie Theresa Stigler>(her daughter) Margie Mary Lapuyade> (Me-her daughter- Margie Vicknair-Pray. All these generations have lived in the New Orleans, Louisiana area, so my ancestors were likely part of the Great Expulsion of French from Nova Scotia.
Hello Margie,

I am very interested in figuring out how you may be connected to the Caplan sisters and/or the Prevost family.

In looking at your matrilineal line on WikiTree, I don't see Francisca Marie Prevost. Could you please tell me more about her?

I also do not see Evalina Marie Frederick. Could you tell me more about her?

We have now shown that Marie Francisca Prevost (1773-) was 4th great granddaughter of Jeanne (De Latour) Saint-Étienne de La Tour (1625-aft.1686), daughter of Charles Saint-Étienne de La Tour (abt.1593-abt.1664) and his 1st spouse Unknown Mi'kmaq (abt.1605-bef.1639).

We have not yet determined that there exists a genealogical relationship between the mother of Jeanne (De Latour) Saint-Étienne de La Tour (1625-aft.1686) and the mother of Marguerite Caplan (abt.1701-abt.1752).
