Biography

Elisabeth Carpenter was born at Rehoboth, Massachusetts on October 25, 1721/2 , the daughter of Daniel Carpenter and Susanna Lyon. [1] [2]

She married Joseph Atwood of Dighton on January 17, 1754. [1] Her husband Joseph was born at Dighton, Massachusetts on August 5, 1704 [3] son of Joseph Sr. and Mary Atwood. [4]

In her father Daniel's will written on February 25, 1760/1, he names his daughter Elizabeth Atwood, among others. [5]

Joseph and Elizabeth had six children. [3]

Joseph Atwood died at Taunton on June 4, 1780. [3] [6]

He died intestate and on June 19, 1780, a committee was appointed by the court to take an estate inventory. Widow Elizabeth Atwood posted bond and was appointed administrator on July 6, 1780. [5]

On August 7, 1787, a committee was appointed by the court to divide Joseph's real estate among the heirs, with widow Elizabeth to receive one third, and the remainder to be divided among the children. [7]

The division of real estate valued at L2059 10s included:

  • one third to widow Elizabeth
  • only son John, a double share valued at L549 4s
  • eldest daughter Susannah, wife of James Andrews Jr. , valued at L274 12s
  • second daughter Mary, valued at L274 12s
  • youngest daughter Hannah Atwood, valued at L274 12s [7]

Elizabeth, widow of Joseph Atwood, died at Taunton, Massachusetts on July 17, 1807, in her 86th year. [6]

On August 4, 1807, Thomas Rose/Rofe Jr. was appointed administrator of Elizabeth's estate. Her personal estate was valued at L500 4s before deductions for nursing care, funeral and burial costs, taxes, administrative costs etc. [8]
