My name is Mary Lucene. My mother intended it should be Lucena like her grandmother but a smart ass nurse changed it thinking she would be doing me a favor. I thought seriously about changing it but after a few years of co/pastoring Indian Missions and several little Navajo girls being named Lucene I've decided to keep it as is.

Mom wanted my nick name to be Ceenee (sounds like See Knee) like Grandpa Called his beloved Lucena. No nick name ever stuck but it's good to know Lucena had a pet name that was so warmly spoken her granddaughter wanted that for her daughter.

When Mae married at 21, in 1897, she was given her grandmothers dresser that had been made by family just for ,her 8th birthday. Mae was also given her grandmothers rolling pin. Later when she was pregnant she was given her grandmothers rocking chair that Lucenia and Mae had both been rocked in and nursed in as infants. May's children and this gr gr grand daughter were all rocked in that chair. It is worse for wear today but Grandma Wheaton's rocking chair is still in use rocking three generations of babies here in the Acoma, Laguna and Navajo reservations where I've pastored for decades.

gr gr Grandma Wheaton's hall tree is getting ready to make another move to another generation. My youngest son,"Tony" wants it. He will be the 6th generation using that hall tree. Several mirrors later it is showing a lot of wear but no one wants to erase all the use and wear by refinishing it. I still use gr gr Grandma Wheaton's simple turned rolling pin. It is still my favorite. It was my wedding present from my grandmother. One handle is beginning to weaken so with this last move back to the Mission Church it will go one the wall. That lovely ladys dresser that was made for gr gr grandma Wheaton on her 8th birthday became my 8th birthday present. I still cherrish it but my husband so loved it he is using it and is very proud of it. I have Lucena's china doll that has lost one leather hand. She was in a watch box when she was given to my mother, Gertrude Rebecca Ash, as a child. An Uncle(Roy or Leroy?) Showers was a Jeweler and had the watch box that is large enough for the doll. I was given that doll about 1976. She still sleeps in that watch box. She was so special to my mother that she looked at her sometime but never played with her except to cuddle her and cry when her little brother died from the flu when he was about 2 years old and she was about 6...then "Clara" went back to the watch box where she still stays. That box may be why she is still with us. My Mothers sister was named Clara Elizabeth as was my mother's First daughter that died at just 6 days old. I'm intrigued....Is there a real life Clara that inspired so much naming after her? Several times seeing those family heirlooms has reminded me life goes on. When it hurts there will still be good times. I lost 2 pregnancies and was widowed twice but life has gone on and been good again. I have 4 grown children, 2 blood grandsons, dozens of step grandchildren, and a 3rd husband. 44 years of pastoring and co/pastoring with a late husband has brought in a poor income but satisfying life vocation. In the overall life is good.
