Note on Name Suffix

This profile refers to the third "John Carraway" in the direct line of John Carraway [i], the immigrant ancestor. In the lineage of the immigrant John Carraway, there are at least eight Johns in eight successive generations, and dozens of Johns in cousin lines with numerous instances of confusing "senior-junior" distinctions. For this reason, we have used a bracketed suffix, "[iii]", to indicate the third person with the same name in successive generations; thus this person is "John [iii], son of John [ii], son of John [i]."

Timeline

  • 1678 - John Carraway [iii], son of John Carraway [ii] and Ann Kemp, was born around 1678 in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia Colony.
  • 6 May 1700 - John [iii] witnessed gift deed from Mary Cannon to daughter Elizabeth Cannon; Elizabeth will be given a bed, a pewter dish and a mirror either on her 16th birthday or on the day she is married, whichever comes first, indicating that she was fifteen or younger in 1700.
  • ca 1701 - John [iii] married Elizabeth Cannon, daughter of Edward & Mary Cannon.
  • 21 September 1701 - John [iii] witnesses will of his father-in-law, Edward Cannon, in which his new wife Elizabeth receives cattle "to be delivered her at age 16," indicating that she was at most fifteen when she married and probably was born ca 1686 or later.
  • 5 October 1704 - John [ii] gives John [iii] 100 acres of land in Princess Anne County, Virginia Colony that John [ii] received from his father, the immigrant John [i].
  • 2 June 1708 - John [ii] gives John [iii] another 150 acres on the western bank of the Linhaven River in Princess Anne County, Virginia Colony.
  • 28 April 1711 - John [iii] granted 72 acres of new land in Princess Anne County, Virginia Colony as part of the indenture agreement for transporting David Rez and James Lowring to the Colony.
  • 4 September 1716 - John [iii] acquires 46 acres of land in the eastern bank of the Linhaven River in Princess Anne County from his wife's uncle & aunt, Edward & Sarah Cannon.
  • 9 April 1719 - Signed Will of John Carraway [iii] "of the Parish of Linhaven in the County of Princess Anne being very sick and weak" at the age of only forty-one.
  • Late April 1719 - John Carraway [iii] dies in Linhaven Parish, Princess Anne County, Virginia Colony.
  • 6 May 1719 - Will of John [iii] probated in Princess Anne County, Virginia Colony.
