Leslie was born in South Australia in 1892, son of Michael Cassidy and Elizabeth nee Drummond.
He was a bricklayer and a jockey (in those days jockeys had to have more than one job). He married Olive Rolfe who died in childbirth in February 1916.
He then married Ivy Myrtle Jenkins, second daughter of W. Jenkins, on the 2nd June, 1917, at St. Luke's Church, Adelaide (likely the St Luke's Church on the west side of Whitmore Square). Leslie was 25 and Ivy, 21 years of age. They had 4 children.
They lived at 52 Corrunna Avenue, Colonel Light Gardens for the rest of their lives in a house names "Ethelville". When he gave up being a jockey, he rode everywhere on a bicycle.
Leslie died in Colonel Light Gardens in 1981 and is buried in Centennial Park Cemetery.
