A PIONEER PASSES.
Late Mr. Edward Cassidy.
There recently passed away at the residence of his son, Percy at Carrington, Newcastle, Mr. Edward Cassidy, one of the oldest and most favorably known personalities of the New England district. Deceased has been ailing for a considerable time, having been the victim of a paralytic stroke last Good Friday, from which he never recovered. The earlier part of his life was spent in Glen Innes and many an interesting conversation of the history of the early days of the town could he relate. The late Mr. Cassidy married Bridget Finnegan, of Armidale, who predeceased hime some 20 years ago. Deceased kept the hotel at the Big Hill in the good old days for a number of years. Then he went to Tent Hill, when the tin fields were booming— he was one of the best-known mining men in the New England district. In later years he carried on a general storekeeping business in Deepwater for a considerable number of years, at all times taking a very prominent part in matters affecting the betterment of the town and district.
Mr. Cassidy leaves a grown up family— Mrs. O. Beirne (Hamilton, Newcastle), Mrs. Hogan (Sydney) Miss Winifred Cassidy (Brisbane) and Messrs. William and Percy (Newcastle), and Edward (Sydney.)
