Biography

William was born in 1808, son of Thomas Chaffey and Maria Israel. All his siblings were born on Norfolk Island, however William was born in Hobart Tas. Buried Cornelian Bay Cemetery Church of England Section K Grave 3.

According to T Talbot, the Will of Thomas Chaffey made 7th September 1847 left a life interest in all his lands to his wife. It passed to William as his mother was also deceased. On Williams death it was to pass to the sons of William-Thomas 20 acres, William George, John and George 12 acres each. Zachariah was already provided for with 56 acres of the orignal grant of 62 acres.

Early Settlement of Sandy Bay by Amy and Fearn Rowntree records an unwell Thomas Chaffey gave his Sandy Bay property to his son William in 1839 for "The sake of the natural love I bear him". (William received 6 acres on 16th July 1839 where he built Travellers Rest Hotel).

Married Mary McKay 28th March 1838.

In 1838 William was Licensee of the Generous Whale in Hobart Town.

1842 William advertised in the Hobart Town Courier The fifth annual regatta was to be held at Chaffeys Point, he providing the grounds and with plentiful food and drink available at the Travellors Rest.

Papers 5th June 1844 report the Insolvency of William Chaffey licensed victualler. It appears he sold a portion of land, 3 acres & 2 roods, at Chaffeys Point to David Dunkley in 1845, I assume to clear his debts the transaction completed in 1847 for 300 pounds.

William s Will dated 5th May 1862 (his actual death in 1872) name some of his children as beneficiaries to be held in trust until 21 years. Those named appear to be the youngest - sons Henry James, James and Edward and his daughters Maria & Emily Ann, Hannah Letitia, Mary Elizabeth. The girls were to receive a one tenth share and the rest divided amongst the boys. The older siblings Thomas, William, John and George it would appear, were already provided for under the terms of their grandfather, Thomas' Will.

At the time of William's death in 1872 (George born 1838, died 1839, and Mary Ann Galphin died 1872, and one other?) all other children appear to be living.

The Sale of William's property in 1873 under the terms of his Will:

Lot 1- Travellors Rest with about 1 acre of garden sold to Mr Chesterman for 450 pound on 21st May 1873. Lot 3- Weatherboard Cottage & garden to Mr Daly for 50 pound on 21st May 1873 Lot 2 -Capital Brick cottage and garden, originally passed in, was sold in July 1873 to Mr. Parker for 180?. A block of land at Sandy Bay, 20 acres, was sold to Mr Gregory for 400 pound. This had originally been divided into 2 lots, one of 7 acres which included an orchard of over 1 acre and the 2nd lot of 12 acres of grazing land.

All household furniture was to be auctioned on 28th May 1873 at the Travellers Rest. It included all furniture from front parlour, bar, Bagetelle room, back parlour, kitchen and bedrooms.

Claims to grants of land appear in advertisements 25th June 1873 for 20 acres originally part of an allocation to Thomas Chaffey. Applicants included Thomas jnr, William Chaffey, Maria Chaffey, Thomas Risby, Edward Espie and William Josephs.

In September and October 1875 further Claims to Grants of land for 35 acres were made by Maria Chaffey, Edward Lipscombe, William George Chaffey, John Chaffey and George Chaffey.
