According to Tasmania Convict Records (online) (15 Aug 2017), Ian L Gordon proposes that, as "Israel" is an unlikely British name, her name was probably Icheral or Acherill.
However, mtDNA (direct female line) from descendants turns up east-European Jewish names, so a Jewish ancestry is likely for Maria.
The crime for which Maria was convicted took place in Sidney's Alley, which is just off Leicester Square in Soho, London. This suggests that she was living in London at the time, and may well have been born there.
Convict Indents record Maria's age as 17, therefore her birth year as 1773.
