Biography

Joseph Chandler

Origins

Joseph was born either 1750 or about 1755 in Lunenburg County, Virginia.[1] Joseph moved to Georgia around 1783, and almost exactly the same time as a different Joseph Chandler moved to Georgia. The two Joseph Chandlers lived very near to one another in Franklin County, which causes a great deal of confusion in the records. The "Other" Joseph who is the subject of Ilene Miller's book, is from Southside Virginia, while Ilene's ancestor Joseph moved to Georgia from North Carolina, across the border from the "Other" Joseph.

For researchers, try to get a copy of this wonderful compilation of family records.

Family

Joseph married Nancy Ann Turman in 1773.[1]

Note that the Turman family name is also found in the records of Southside Virginia, and it is highly likely the families knew each other and lived adjacent. The Turman family apparently also moved to Georgia at the same time. Her father, Thomas Turman is most likely the owner of Turman's Mill noted in some records.

Joseph and family most likely moved through Virginia to North Carolina, and then South Carolina, and crossed into Georgia near the present day town of Augusta, into Wilkes County. His name is listed in Elbert County court records before 1790 and after. In 1792, he received a land grant for land in Franklin County, Georgia. According to Miller's book, he is said to have been living in Elbert County in 1804-1809. Thomas Turman's will in Elbert County Will Book "L-F" shows him a distribution of rent from the plantation. Other deed records show him as living in Franklin County.

Children of Joseph Chandler and Nancy Turman are:[2]

  1. John Chandler, born Abt. 1778.
  2. Sterling Chandler, born April 06, 1782 in North Carolina (According to 1850 Census); died April 18, 1858 in Jackson County Georgia, Age: 76-Years; married Edith Bryant 1803 in Georgia.
  3. Sarah Chandler, born Abt. 1783; married Eli Bryant.
  4. Robert Chandler, born Abt. 1786; married Jane Hobbs.
  5. Susannah Chandler, born Abt. 1788 in Franklin County, Georgia; married Samuel Sewell; born in Franklin County, Georgia.
  6. Gaines Chandler, born Abt. 1792 in Franklin County, Georgia; married Mary Polly Howington August 21, 1817 in Franklin County, Georgia.

Dudley Jones was a tavern owner circa 1810-1820, and was a Justice of the Peace. He is likely the source of Joseph's naming of his grandson, Sterling's son.

Note that according to Miller's book, the will of this Joseph was not found but in fact its pages were intermixed with those of the other Joseph, in the state archives.

Occupation

Joseph owned land which may have been at Bear Creek, Franklin County. He lived in Franklin County, Georgia, for many years, serving as a Justice of the Peace and Judge until his death in 1822.[1]

Death and Legacy

Joseph was probably buried at Franklin County, Georgia, where he died in 1822. Actual grave site has not been found.

I removed John Chandler Chandler-1887 as the father and I will remove Wells-3603 as the mother. Both appear to be cases of mistaken identity -- different men named John Chandler.
