On the 1861 census, William, aged 11 years, is living on Barnsley Lane, Lamesley, with his parents and siblings: Jane (14 years), James (8 years), Margaret (6 years) and Lettice (2 years).[4]
William married Elizabeth Howey in Tynemouth, Northumberland, in 1879 and they had ten children.[5]
On the 1881 census, William, a gardener, and Elizabeth are living at West View Lodge, Gateshead, Durham, with their infant daughter, Elizabeth (1 year). A daughter, Jane, born in 1880, died in infancy.[6]
On the 1891 census, William, a gardener, and Elizabeth are living at Forest Lodge Cottage, Longbenton, Tynemouth, with their children: Elizabeth (11 years), Frederick (7 years) and Hamer (2 years). Four more sons, William, Frederick, another William, and Percy, have died in infancy.[7]
On the 1901 census, William, a shifter, and Elizabeth are living at Waggoner's Row, Longbenton, Tynemouth, with their daughter, Elizabeth, aged 21 years, and Hamer, aged 12 years.[8]
On the 1911 census, William, a widower, is living at Mayfield West Moor, Forest Hall, Newcastle On Tyne, with his daughter, Elizabeth, aged 30 years, and Hamer, aged 22 years. Although William is a widower, the record still shows he was married for twenty-eight years and ten children were born but only two are living.[9]
William Clues died, aged 67 years, on 2 February 1917.[10]
