James married Thankful Thomas at Middleboro, 6 Mar 1717/8.[2] Thankful, was born 30 June 1695[3] and died 17 April 1743, both in Middleboro. She was the daughter of Jeremiah and Lydia (Howland) Thomas and was descended from Mayflower passenger John Howland. Her father's will, dated 29 Sep 1735, named his daughter Thankful Cobb.[1]
James was a blacksmith.[4] He died in his 47th year 27 Jan 1743/4, in Middleboro, and was buried at "The Green" with his wife.[1][5] He left no will.[1]
His inventory was taken on 21 March 1743 in Middleborough.[6] In 1752, an account of his estate was recorded.[7]
William Cushman was appointed guardian to James' young children Priscilla and Elizabeth 6 Mar 1743 [1743/4].[1] The estate was settled 6 Apr 1748. James, the only son, received the estate and paid cash to his siblings; Lydia wife of Seth Howland, Rachel wife of Samuel Smith, Thankfule wife of Ichabod Wood, Patience wife of William Winslow and Sarah, Priscilla and Elizabeth Cobb.[1][8][9]
