Clinton Coffman was born at Fishers Hill, Shenandoah County, Virginia, in 1915, son of George and Lucy Bly Coffman, was age 14 when his parents died and lived with relatives until he joined the United States Army in 1936. He served for a year, part of that time he was in the Panama Canal Zone. After leaving the army he went to Uniontown, Pennsylvania, with his brother, Raymond, where their uncle, Lloyd Coffman, lived and they found work with the Frick Coke and Coal company.
