Biography

This profile is part of the Chebacco Parish, Massachusetts One Place Study.

Francis Cogswell was born on 26 Mar 1701, in Chebacco Parish in Ipswich, Essex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay. He was the son of John Cogswell, Jr. and Hannah Goodhue.[1]

Francis married Hannah Woodbury in Beverly, Essex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay on 12 May 1726.[2] They settled in the Chebacco Parish community of Ipswich, where they registered the birth or baptism of seven children:

  1. Ebenezer Cogswell (b. 25 Dec 1727)[3]
  2. Hannah Cogswell (b. 29 Jan 1729)[4]
  3. Lydia Cogswell (b. 22 Jul 1732)[5]
  4. Francis Cogswell (b. 4 Feb 1734)[6]
  5. Joseph Cogswell (b. 16 Aug 1736)[7]
  6. Eunice Cogswell (b. 27 Sep 1739)[8]
  7. Abigail Cogswell (bp. 14 Feb 1741/2, Chebacco Parish Church)[9]

Francis died in Ipswich, Essex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay at the age of 73 (in his 74th year) on 28 Oct 1774.[10] He was buried at Old Burying Ground, located in the area (Chebacco Parish) which later became Essex, Massachusetts. His memorial has a photo and links to those of family members.[11]

His will, dated June 6, 1772 and proved on November 25, 1774, names the following family members:[12]

  • "well beloved Elizabeth" [sic]
  • son Francis Cogswell
  • son Joseph Cogswell
  • son-in-law Abraham Dodge
  • daughter Hannah Lane
  • daughter Lydia Potter
  • daughter Eunice Farley
  • daughter Abigail Dodge
