Biography

The Peerage of Ireland, under Viscount Enniskillen,[1] suggests that Thomas Cole, of London, was the son of John Cole and Mary, daughter and heiress to Thomas Archdeacon (ancient name - Ercedekne), gent. of Devon.[2] There is no mention in source of a location of birth although some sites suggest it to have been Slade in Devon.

He appears in the family history on page 22.[3] The family historian notes a 1585 book of pedigrees written by Robert Cooke where it is suggested that "this Thomas Cole, was son and heir to William, second son of Sir John Cole, Knt. and lineally descended of the said Sir John Cole". This has not been confirmed at this point.

Thomas Cole died in April 1571[4] and is buried in Allhallows church, London. [5]

Family

Thomas Cole married Elizabeth Hargrave, daughter of Thomas Hargrave, of London.[6][7] Neither source is particularly forthcoming with any material on Elizabeth. The family of Thomas and Elizabeth is also noticed in the Parliamentary Memoirs of Fermanagh and Tyrone, from 1613 to 1885.[8]

Both sources, likely citing each other, suggest they had four sons and one daughter;

  • Martha Cole. She married John Worsop of Clapham in Surrey, Gent.. They had a son John Worsop, of Windsor, Esq. and two daughters, viz. Rose, (married to George Smith, of Micham in Surrey, Gent,; and Elizabeth, married to Sir Thomas Watson, of Kent, Knt..

The sons:[9]

  • William Cole. Designed "of London", died 6 Feb 1600. Married Anne Colles, daughter of Michael Colles of Bradwell, Buckinghamshire. They had three sons; Michael, William and Thomas and a daughter, Margaret.
  • Thomas Cole. Joined the church and studied a bachelor of divinity. He had no children.[10][11]
  • Emmanuel Cole. He will become the immediate ancestor to the Viscount Enniskillen.[12][13]
  • Solomon Cole. He was born 8 January 1547. He married Mary Deering, daughter and heiress to Thomas Deering of Lyss in the county of Southampton, and from her inherited the property.[14][15] They had five sons and two daughters.

This shows that Thomas Cole was born 1515 and married 1520 and then had William Cole 1540.

I haven’t done extensive research on these dates yet but I am thinking maybe he married in the late 1530s. This would put him in his 20s when he married and when he fathered William Cole.

Does this person ( and his wife) need to be managed by EuroAristo? It doesn't seem that he (or his wife) was an Aristo.

Thanks Jo, I have removed EuroAristo as manager from both profiles.

Cole-615 and Coles-381 appear to represent the same person because: same person; please merge.
Is there any reason to believe that Elizabeth Hargrave actually died in 1549, and that she was the mother of the younger sons Emanuel, Solomon and John? The pedigrees seem to agree that Thomas was the father of both the older and younger sons, but it seems somewhat likely to me that he had them by two different wives.
