Biography

Note on Birth Date

The Shoemaker Book cites a birth date of "about 1728",[1] while Alvin Countryman cites a date of "about 1738 to 1740".[2] But the DAR, in their Lineage Books, cite the date as 1733,[3][4] which has been used here.

Revolutionary War Service

Military Service: French-Indian Wars He served in the American Revolution as an Ensign and Lieutenant in Captain Diefendorf's company of the 1st Regiment of the Tryon County Militia, generally known as Col. Clyde's Regiment.[3]
REVOLUTIONARY WAR: 1778. Appointed 1st Lieutenant in Capt. Jacob Diefendorf's Co. Col. Clydes Reg, of Tryon Co. Militia, March 4 1780.
1783 promoted to Captain of Militia. Resigned in 1798[5]

Residence

His home was located in what was known as Dutchtown, later called Minden. During a raid by the Tories and Indians in 1780, George's home was the only one left standing. Apparently his brother Jacob had been part of the Loyalist force and had prevailed upon his comrades to spare the house, thinking his own family, which he had left behind, were present there. After the war, Jacob wrote to George assuring him that if he had known that they were not there, he "would have seen his house smoke like the rest". George is reputed to have replied "forbidding his brother ever to darken his door."[6]
