Biography

Notes

  • Barney was a sailor according to the 1861 census. The birth record of Barney, Jr., lists him as a farmer. He was not in the 1851 census for Edwardsburgh township. His first two children, Joseph and George, were listed as being born in England. The 1865 U.S. census lists Joseph as born in England, also.[1]

  • In 1899 Farmer's and Business Directory, Bernard is a freeholder and living at Lot J Concession 1 in Johnstown with a Prescott post office). This lot is next to lot 11 of William (the elder) as indicated in William's 1889 will. The household consisted of Bernard (son of William), Esther (second wife of William), James (Barnard's brother) and William, a "tenant.” This William is a puzzle to us. He is not the husband of Esther as he died in 1889. He is not the son of that same William as he is married to Kate, and living with his family in the U.S. by 1865. He is not William Henry, son of Barney who married Marie Gilbo and was living in Ogdensburg in 1899. We have a death certificate for a William Countryman, labourer, born in Prescott and died single at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital in Prescott of pneumonia at the age of 41. He was born 1 August 1868 and died 12 April 1910. The father is unknown on the certificate. This William was probably the "tenant.” By the 1901 census, he was still living with this family. James' obituary says his brother William is in Ogdensburg thus suggesting that the tenant William was not a son of Barney.[2]

  • In the 1901 census Ella, daughter of Esther, and wife of Bernard Jr., was living in the household of Mr. and Mrs. French and family in Prescott. It looks like the occupation of Ella in the census was erased at the time of enumeration. Why she was listed with this family when she had a four-year-old son is unknown. Perhaps she was a domestic.[3]
