Adam Cowan was born in 1823 in Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, to parents James Cowan and Grace Waugh. He was their third child. His baptism took place on 5 Oct 1823 in Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. He was almost certainly born in Nether Murthat Cottage. His parents were living there at the time. His exact date of birth is unknown. It is likely to have been in August or September 1823.

Adam Cowan married Mary Bell on 18 August 1850 at High Church Abbey, Paisley, Scotland. He and Mary had nine children between 1851 and 1873. Their first six children were born in Scotland, and the final three were born in Co. Durham, England.

The family left Scotland in 1865 and moved to Wingate, Durham, England. Adam began work at the local coal mine. At some time in the late 1880s he retired and moved to Gateshead, Co. Durham, and lived with his wife and his two youngest sons George and Walter at 28 Penshaw St., Gateshead, Durham, England.

He passed away at 28 Penshaw St., Gateshead, Durham, England, in January 1897. After his death his wife, Mary, moved in with her daughter Grace (Cowan) Laws and son-in-law John Laws at Little Benton Farm, Long Benton, Northumberland.
