Robert married the daughter of James Perkins, and sister of Hon. Thomas Handasyde Perkins, of Boston Massachusetts.
Captain Robert Cushing (born 1755 in Scituate, Massachusetts) was of a long established New England family, whose ancestor, the first Matthew Cushing, arrived in this country in 1638. Robert Cushing married Ann Maynard "Nancy" Perkins and they had two children : Ann, who married Henry Higginson and John Perkins Cushing.
Captain Cushing was a restless man who left his wife in charge of the family while he pursued fortune that eluded him. When Nancy died of smallpox, John Perkins Cushing (1787-1862) was raised by his uncle, Thomas Handasyde Perkins.
