Biography

Based on her marriage date, Elizabeth Dale was born about 1525.[1] She was the daughter of Mathew Dale of Bristol and the City of London, a wealthy haberdasher.[2][3] (Mathew wrote his Will on 20 July 1549 and signed and sealed it on 4 April 1550. In it he mentioned sons Henry, James, John, and Matthew; son and heir William; daughter Mary Marler; my cousin Robert Dale; Henry Wyott, my sister’s son; sons in law Walter Marler and Gregory Isham, and to each of their wives I give a black gown; my cousin Elizabeth Dale, my brother William’s daughter a black gown; Roger Dale my cousin.[4])

Elizabeth married, first, Gregory Isham, on 16 Dec 1548 at Saint Pancras Soper Lane, London, London, England.[1][2][5] He was born about 1520 and died 4 Sept 1558. Elizabeth and Gregory had 4 children:[3]

  • Elizabeth. b. posthumous in 1558; m. Henry Cave; bur'd. Old Warden, Bedfordshire 15 Nov 1630

After her first husband's death, Elizabeth Dale married, 25 June 1562 at St. Michael, Paternoster Royal, London, Middlesex, England[7], William Rosewell of Ford Abbey who later became the Solicitor-General to Queen Elizabeth. [3] William and Elizabeth had three children:[8]

  • Parry (d. 1573)
  • William (1561–1593)
  • Philippa, m Sir George Speke of Whitelackington, Somerset in 1584.
  • Elizabeth is not mentioned in William Rosewell's will, dated 10 June 1566 and probated 6 Nov 1566.[9] She died before 30 March 1568 with a burial date of 30 March 1568 at St. Michael, Paternoster Royal, London, Middlesex, England[7]. See her listing at Find a Grave for further family details.
