Biography

David Lewis Dalrymple was born in Morris county, New Jersey on 21 December 1866, the son of William D. and Elmira Dalrymple. He married Hannah Irene (née?). David died in New Jersey in 1918, aged 51-52, and is buried with his wife, daughter Elmira E., and (step-sister) Anna E. Dalrymple at Saint Stephens Episcopal Cemetery, Millburn, Essex, NJ.[1]

In 1880, the Dalrymple family lived in Morris, Morris county, New Jersey. All members of the household were born in NJ, as were their parents. The household included William D. Dalrymple, 55, a coach man; his wife S. Elmira, 42; and children (one from each of William’s marriage): Anna E., 24; and David, L., 13. [2]

In 1900, the Dalrymple family lived at 174 Third St., Newark, New Jersey. All members of the household were born in New Jersey, as were their parents, except as noted. All could read and write. The household included David Dalrymple, 24, bone Dec. 1866, a machinist, who owned their home with a mortgage; his wife of eight years, Hannah S., 34, b. Sept. 1866, who had had one child; and daughter, Elmira C., 7, b. June 1893, in school. Also, David’s stepfather (in law), George Robertson, 66, b. Scotland, as were his parents, b. Feb. 1834, a bookkeeper; George’s wife, Mary J. Robertson, 62, b. Aug. 1838 had had five children, two were living; and their daughter, Emma Robertson, 21, b. March 1879, a stenographer. Also, David’s sister, Anna Dalrymple, 43, b. Feb. 1857. Living nearby, at 196 Third St. was David’s brother Edward and his family.[3]

In 1910, they lived in the same house, 174 Third Street, Newark, New Jersey. The household included David L. Dalrymple, 43, a machinist, who owned their house without a mortgage; his wife of 18 years (1st marriage for both), Hannah G., 43; their daughter, Elmira E., 16, in school; David’s sister, Anna E., 53, cashier in a restaurant; and a boarder, Lillian Milford, 36, a widow, and a nurse.[4]

In 1915, the Dalrymple family lived in the same house, 174 Third St., Newark, New Jersey. Ownership of the house, with a mortgage, is listed for Anne E., Dalrymple. The household included (head of household) David Dalrymple, 48, born Dec 1867, a steam fitter; Hannah I., 47, b. Sept. 1868; Anne E., 59, b. Feb. 1856, a cashier; Elmira E., 21, b. June 1894, a clerk; and Emma A. Robertson, 35, b. March 1880, a stenographer.[5]
